Full Job Description
Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking an Aircraft Technical Support Engineer to support new vehicle launch from first build through early flight test program. This is a new, field-facing role created to give the vehicle programs a dedicated technical owner for issue triage, repair coordination, and on-site problem-solving.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer or technical program manager who is energized by being where the product is: by the test stand, on the production floor, or by the aircraft. You'll act as the first line of defense when technical issues arise—triaging quickly, reviewing data, supporting initial assessments, pulling in the right subject matter experts, and driving the issues through root cause, disposition, rework, and return to service. Over time, you'll also help build the tools and processes that make this work more efficient, partnering with engineering, technical program management, factory systems, and data/AI teams to automate field technical support.

This role will work across Engineering, Production, Fleet Care, Flight Test, Reliability, and Aircraft NPI teams, and will require regular travel to production, test, and field locations.

The position will be based at our Marina location with occasional travel to Santa Cruz (HQ) as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the first line of defense for fleet and test issues—support issue triage and severity assessment, determine the fastest safe path to resolution, pulling in appropriate subject matter experts as needed
  • Partner with Technical Program Management, Design, Manufacturing, and Quality to document, prioritize, and implement learnings into designs and processes
  • Develop and champion tools—including AI-driven approaches—that pull and link data from multiple platforms to speed up initial assessment, automate documentation, clearly highlight technical debt/trends, and inform design and process updates
  • Travel on-site to support initial assessment of issues during vehicle build, test, and return to service; own end-to-end repair and rework lifecycle coordination from scoping through safety-of-flight clearance and return to fleet/service
  • Lead or support root cause investigation and cross-functional disposition for issues surfaced via flight test, maintenance, etc., closing the loop from initial report through final resolution
  • Track LRU/equipment repair and rework progress, ensure NCR disposition and clean handoffs, and navigate production scheduling and process constraints to protect aircraft uptime
  • Interface with Aircraft New Product Introduction and Integration teams to ensure configuration alignment, planned deviations, and unique flight test instrumentation (FTI) requirements are well understood
  • Learn and apply intimate product and process knowledge to support the scoping of MRO facilities, tooling, and equipment for flight test deployments
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, or a related engineering field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with mechanical or electromechanical systems in a test, production, MRO, or field-support environment
  • Demonstrated ability to triage and troubleshoot hardware issues independently in ambiguous or fast-moving environments
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site and travel on short notice (domestic and international) to test, production, and field locations as issues arise
  • Working knowledge of project and issue-tracking tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Smartsheet
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical detail for both engineering and program stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust quickly and coordinate across multiple teams and disciplines
  • Comfortable operating with significant autonomy and making fast, well-reasoned decisions under time pressure
  •
Desired
  • Experience in a test, production, MRO, or field-support environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple sites and time zones, domestically and internationally
  • Experience building and implementing new processes/workflows
  • Experience leveraging AI tools
  •
