The Ward Family Heart Center at Children's Mercy Kansas City is the premier high-volume pediatric heart program in the Midwest. Our focused, interdisciplinary care of children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease brings to bear the expertise of board-certified pediatric cardiologists, congenital cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac intensivists, anesthesiologists, and advanced practice pediatric critical care nurses. Our facilities include a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care unit in 2021 and the most advanced technology available for diagnosis, treatment, and translational research for our patients, who range in age from fetal to young adult.
The Acute Care Cardiology Unit (ACCU) is the inpatient cardiology service. The Acute Care Cardiology APNs provide 24/7 coverage to all high acuity cardiac patients which includes but is not limited to, single ventricle patients, transplant patients, post-operative and post- cardiac catheterization patients. The APRN would participate in patientcare rounds (with directpatientmanagement), order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, analyze and prioritize complex data, develop differential diagnoses, and implement plans of care. The APRN would be responsible for daily progress notes as well as family education. The APRN is a resource for residency staff and a collaborator with the multiple cardiac sub-specialties. The APRN would also work with the CV surgeons on post-operative care, including but not limited to incisional management, removal of chest tubes and pacer wires, and wound vac therapy.The APRN will also cross train and help support all inpatient cardiology units -CICU and consult roles as well. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses II (APRN-II) provides proficient, comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. An APRN II obtains a comprehensive health history; performs physical examination; formulates a plan of care and treatment; prescribes/performs diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and procedures; and participates in patient and family education. Each APRN-II demonstrates professional leadership and participates in evidenced-based practice, quality improvement, and/or research activities, and organizational development.

Qualifications- Master's Degree and 1-2 years pediatric experience, required; DNP preferred for APRNs but not required
- APRNs must have RN compact license in their primary residency state or if they do not reside in a compact state both MO and KS single state RN license
- APRNs must have MO and KS APRN licensure.
- PA's must have MO and KS PA licensure
- National Board Certification required for state licensure
