Full Job Description
About The Role:
You will run the monthly close, own the audit relationship, keep our SaaS accounting clean, and manage remote team members. Level (Manager vs. Senior Manager) will be set by experience. This is a hands-on role for someone who likes to build, fix and automate - and who sees AI as a core part of how modern accounting gets done.
What You'll Do:
Close and reporting
Own the monthly, quarterly and year-end close in QuickBooks Online (QBO), including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferred revenue and balance sheet reconciliations.
Consolidate a multi-entity group (US parent plus UK subsidiary), including multi-currency (GBP) accounting, FX remeasurement and intercompany eliminations.
Prepare monthly financial statements, management reporting packages for leadership, the board and lender reporting.
Maintain the chart of accounts, close calendar and documented procedures.
Revenue and billing
Apply ASC 606 to SaaS license, subscription, usage-based and professional services contracts, including multi-element arrangements, amendments and SOWs.
Review customer contracts to set up billing correctly; oversee invoicing, deferred revenue schedules and collections on AR.
Audit, tax and compliance
Manage the annual financial statement audit end to end: PBC lists, schedules, auditor requests, timelines and draft financial statement and footnote review.
Coordinate with the outside tax firm on the income tax provision (ASC 740), federal and state returns, and 1099 reporting.
Own sales and use tax compliance, including the changing taxability of SaaS and digital products by state (e.g., California's upcoming SaaS sales tax).
Maintain internal controls that support our SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 commitments, including segregation of duties and access controls.
Accounts payable
Oversee AP and vendor payments, with strict verification controls for new vendors and any change to banking or remittance details.
Commissions and payroll
Accrue sales commissions per plan, and account for capitalized contract costs under ASC 340-40.
Review payroll and benefits accounting, and support equity and headcount reporting.
Team, projects and process
Manage and review the work of our outsourced remote accounting team across time zones.
Support corporate transactions (acquisitions, divestitures, entity changes): financial diligence, carve-out financials, transition accounting, and customer/vendor notifications.
Lead process improvement and automation, using AI tools to reduce manual work in reconciliations, reporting, contract review and close.
What You'll Bring:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
6+ years of progressive accounting experience (8+ for Senior Accounting Manager), with at least 3 years in a SaaS or software company.
Advanced, hands-on QuickBooks Online experience, including multi-entity and multi-currency setups.
Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP, especially ASC 606 revenue recognition for software and subscription contracts.
Experience managing external financial statement audits as the primary point of contact.
Experience managing remote staff or contractors, including reviewing their work and setting priorities.
Advanced Excel / Google Sheets skills (lookups, pivots, building reconciliations and models).
Ability to read and interpret customer and vendor contracts for accounting and billing impact.
Nice to have:
CPA (active or inactive); Big 4 or regional audit firm background is a plus.
Sales commission accounting and ASC 340-40 contract cost capitalization.
Multi-state sales and use tax compliance for SaaS, including tools such as Avalara.
Experience with transactions: M&A, divestitures or carve-outs, entity restructurings, and lender/covenant reporting in a PE- or debt-backed company.
Experience operating in a SOC 1 / SOC 2 controlled environment.
Familiarity with AR automation and billing tools, and experience invoicing enterprise customers through their supplier portals (e.g., SAP Ariba, Coupa).
Who you are:
AI-forward. You already use AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) in your work and actively look for ways to automate reconciliations, variance analysis, contract review and reporting. You can show us an example.
Adaptable and curious. You're comfortable with ambiguity, take on new areas such as tax, treasury or transaction work, and keep expanding your knowledge.
Detail-driven owner. You tie things out, find root causes of variances, and don't wait to be asked to fix a broken process.
Clear communicator. You write concise memos and explain accounting positions to auditors, executives, customers and vendors.
Control-minded. You protect company cash and data, and treat confidentiality and payment-fraud prevention as part of the job.
Builder in a lean team. You're happy to be both player and coach, and thrive in a small, fast-moving finance function.
What We Have to Offer:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $125,000 to $135,000. Additionally, your wellbeing is our priority. We want our Whipsters to feel set up for success at work and at home.
