What Does an Epileptologist Do?

Epileptologists are neurologists with advanced expertise in seizure disorders. They evaluate patients, interpret electroencephalograms (EEGs) and other diagnostic studies, develop treatment plans, and help manage complex or drug-resistant epilepsy. Depending on the role, they may also oversee epilepsy monitoring units, collaborate on surgical evaluations, and coordinate care with neurosurgeons and other specialists.

Common Epileptologist Responsibilities

  • Assess seizure history and diagnose epilepsy and related conditions.
  • Interpret EEG recordings and other neurological tests.
  • Manage anti-seizure medications and discuss treatment options.
  • Evaluate patients for advanced therapies, including epilepsy surgery or neuromodulation.
  • Work with multidisciplinary care teams and educate patients and families.
  • Contribute to clinical research, teaching, or program development when required.

Qualifications for Epileptologist Roles

These positions typically require a medical degree, completion of a neurology residency, and fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology or epilepsy. Employers generally require board certification or eligibility in neurology, along with an active medical license for the state where care is provided. Specific requirements vary by employer, seniority, and clinical focus.

Where Epileptologists Work

Epileptologists may practice in academic medical centers, hospitals with comprehensive epilepsy programs, outpatient neurology clinics, and specialty practices. Some roles combine patient care with research, medical education, or leadership of an epilepsy center or monitoring unit.
