What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Nuclear Facilities Engineering Electrical Engineer role operates at the core of the LANL nuclear mission, where reliability, safety, and performance are non negotiable. This position supports the implementation of nuclear facility engineering requirements across a complex regulatory environment that includes the Nuclear Safety Management Rule, DOE Orders, national consensus codes and standards, recognized quality requirements, Laboratory directives, and federal, state, and local regulations.

Electrical Engineers in this space are responsible for the systems that power, monitor, and protect nuclear operations. They contribute to the technical foundation for electrical distribution systems, instrumentation and control systems, safety systems, and operational equipment. This includes defining requirements, supporting system design and analysis, and ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance with nuclear safety and quality standards.

Working across disciplines, Electrical Engineers partner with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, and project management teams to ensure electrical systems and requirements are integrated effectively and support mission execution. This role requires the ability to contribute within a specialized engineering discipline while building the judgment and technical depth needed to operate independently. Engineers apply sound engineering principles, utilize modern engineering tools and technologies, and continuously improve processes to meet evolving mission demands and operational needs.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 - $96,600 - $158,000
  • Supports the Laboratory's nuclear mission through the application of electrical engineering principles to nuclear facility systems and infrastructure. Contributes to electrical engineering activities including power distribution, instrumentation and control systems, electrical safety, power quality, and system reliability for nuclear facilities.
  • Performs and supports engineering analyses such as short circuit, coordination, equipment sizing, fault current, arc flash, and lighting studies for medium and low voltage systems. Assists with the design, modification, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment supporting nuclear operations.
  • Works under direction to support upgrades, repairs, and new installations, while ensuring compliance with nuclear safety, quality, and regulatory requirements. May support qualification activities for roles such as Cognitive System Engineer on Vital Safety Systems.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 - $106,400 - $176,000
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:
  • Applies electrical engineering knowledge with greater independence to support and execute design, analysis, and implementation of nuclear facility electrical systems. Contributes to the performance, reliability, and safety of power distribution and instrumentation systems supporting Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities.
  • Performs engineering studies and develops design solutions with increased ownership, ensuring integration across disciplines including mechanical, structural, and fire protection engineering. Supports system upgrades, modifications, and new installations while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and nuclear safety requirements.
  • Collaborates across teams and contributes to project execution, providing technical input and guidance to less experienced engineers while continuing to build depth in nuclear facility electrical engineering practices.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Foundational knowledge of engineering work planning, construction practices, control methods, and project or process engineering practices.
  • Awareness of applicable industry, regulatory, and national codes and standards, as well as engineering principles, procedures, design guides, and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering analysis and calculation techniques to support engineered solutions.
  • Ability to communicate engineering concepts and solutions effectively, both verbally and in writing, with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel.
  • Working knowledge of standard business and engineering software tools, including Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Working knowledge of engineering work planning, construction practices, control methods, and project or process engineering practices, with ability to apply them to assigned tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to technical reports, engineering studies, and analyses supporting the technical baseline for facility systems.
  • Experience supporting design and analysis activities, including development of calculations, system parameters, specifications, and design concepts that meet defined requirements.
  • Experience evaluating system performance, supporting system health assessments, and contributing to corrective actions or improvements.
  • Ability to coordinate and interface effectively with multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholders during design and project execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable.

Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but who do not meet the two-year experience requirement, are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an allowable variance.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of electrical power systems, including power distribution, system protection, power quality, and reliability for industrial or nuclear facilities.
  • Familiarity with electrical analysis and modeling tools used for studies such as short circuit, coordination, arc flash, and load flow.
