DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to join our Surveying/Geomatics team supporting transportation, infrastructure, construction, municipal, and land development projects. The Survey Crew Chief will lead field survey crews and be responsible for the accurate collection of survey data, construction layout, topographic surveys, boundary surveys, as-built documentation, and other field surveying activities.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on field professional who can effectively lead a survey crew, operate modern surveying equipment, interpret engineering and construction plans, and work closely with project managers, engineers, inspectors, contractors, and public agencies.
Responsibilities- Lead and supervise daily activities of a survey field crew, including Survey Technicians and Instrument Operators.
- Perform and oversee field surveys for transportation, roadway, bridge, utility, municipal, site development, and infrastructure projects.
- Operate and maintain robotic total stations, conventional total stations, digital levels, GNSS/GPS equipment, data collectors, and other modern surveying equipment.
- Perform construction layout and staking for roadway, drainage, utilities, structures, bridges, site improvements, and other infrastructure.
- Conduct topographic, boundary, existing conditions, utility, right-of-way, and as-built surveys.
- Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical control networks and benchmarks.
- Collect accurate field data and verify measurements, elevations, coordinates, and control points.
- Interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, survey plans, and engineering documents.
- Perform calculations and field checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of survey information.
- Prepare and maintain field notes, daily reports, sketches, survey records, and electronic data.
- Download, organize, and transfer field data for use by surveyors, engineers, designers, and project managers.
- Coordinate with construction managers, inspectors, contractors, engineers, utility companies, and public agencies while working in the field.
- Identify discrepancies between plans and existing field conditions and communicate issues to the appropriate project team members.
- Assist with quantity measurements, progress surveys, and construction verification as required.
- Ensure survey equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and secured.
- Promote safe work practices and ensure field activities comply with company and project-specific safety requirements.
- Work in and around active construction zones, roadways, utilities, and other challenging field environments.
- Travel to project sites throughout the region as required.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5+ years of professional land surveying or construction surveying experience, preferably within transportation, infrastructure, municipal, or heavy civil construction.
- Previous experience leading or supervising a survey field crew.
- Strong understanding of surveying principles, field procedures, and construction layout.
- Experience operating robotic total stations, total stations, digital levels, and GPS/GNSS equipment.
- Experience with electronic data collectors and field survey software.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, construction drawings, survey plans, and specifications.
- Strong mathematical, measurement, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and within active construction environments.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
