Full Job Description
As a Staff Software Engineer on Tax Experiences, you'll operate as a technical leader across the org - setting architectural direction, raising the bar on engineering craft, and driving AI-powered innovation into products used by tens of millions of taxpayers each season. You'll partner closely with product, design, and data science to solve some of the hardest problems in consumer fintech: guiding customers through complex tax situations simply, accurately, and at massive scale, with the seasonality and precision demands unique to tax.

Responsibilities
  • Drive significant technology initiatives end-to-end across multiple layers of the Tax Experiences architecture, from customer-facing interview flows to backend calculation and filing systems.
  • Architect and develop highly scalable, resilient applications that can handle extreme seasonal traffic spikes during peak tax season.
  • Drive the design and implementation of durable software solutions that solve critical customer problems - solutions that are scalable, secure, easy to maintain, and integrate cleanly with numerous upstream and downstream systems.
  • Set technical direction and provide recommendations and best practices for application development, platform development, and developer tooling across the Tax Experiences org.
  • Actively stay abreast of industry best practices in tax technology and AI, share learnings broadly, and experiment with and apply cutting-edge techniques.
  • Provide and inspire innovations that fuel the growth of Tax Experiences and Intuit as a whole, generating creative ideas for emerging business needs (e.g., new filing scenarios, expanded tax situations, personalization).
  • Work with global, cross-functional teams across time zones, including product, design, tax content, and compliance stakeholders.
  • Communicate clearly, succinctly, and persuasively to all levels of employees, customers, and management, including executives.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance tax software applications with AI technology, such as intelligent guidance, automated document extraction, and personalized recommendations.
  • Coach and mentor senior and junior engineers on software engineering best practices, applying AI to enhance applications, and building technical depth to ensure efficient, high-quality outcomes.


  • Launch AI integrations into production tax products and evaluate their impact on software performance, accuracy, and customer satisfaction using appropriate metrics.


Qualifications
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of total experience delivering enterprise-class applications, with a track record of technical leadership at Staff level or above.
  • Solid foundation in writing scalable application code following best practices of accessibility, internationalization, and instrumentation.
  • Experience with cross-browser, cross-platform, and design constraints on the web and mobile.
  • Deep expertise in algorithms, design patterns, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Proficiency in mid-tier languages like Java, and experience architecting high-throughput backend services.
  • Experience with test automation: TDD, unit/integration/functional testing, at scale.
  • Experience with relational database design and implementation; strong experience with SQL/NoSQL database design and analytics.
  • Deep experience building CI/CD pipelines and driving engineering velocity across teams.
  • Practical experience developing applications using microservices and container technologies/management systems such as Kubernetes.
  • Prior experience in utility computing and/or cloud computing domains, building and deploying applications and services into cloud environments.
  • Proficient in building or integrating functional AI models using techniques such as LLM prompting, AutoML modeling, etc.
  • Skilled in evaluating and monitoring AI technology performance in production and making adjustments to ensure optimal application performance.
  • In-depth understanding of AI integration, with the ability to lead the integration process effectively while coaching engineers across levels on how to leverage AI.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, product managers, tax domain experts, and software engineers.


  • Prior experience in tax, fintech, or highly regulated/compliance-driven domains is a plus.


Intuit provides a competitive compensation package with a strong pay for performance rewards approach. Pay offered is based on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and work location. The expected base pay range for this position is:
San Diego $188,500 - $255,000
