Full Job Description
The Specialist Software Engineer on the Commercial A-Team will focus on integration applications that enable policy transaction processing, downstream data movement, and operational support across Commercial Lines. This role will primarily support two integration domains: ACE (App Connect Enterprise) and CL ETL Batch. In ACE, the engineer will work on application and service integration, message routing, security, deployment, configuration, and data transformation between upstream and downstream systems. In CL ETL Batch, the engineer will support the pipeline that takes PolicyCenter transaction data through IDS/Oracle-based processing and transforms it into files, feeds, and reporting outputs used by downstream systems, vendors, and bureaus.

Primary focus areas
  • Design, enhance, and support ACE integrations that connect PolicyCenter and other services through secure APIs, message routing, and payload transformation.
  • Build and maintain ACE flows that obtain authentication tokens, invoke REST services, construct request payloads, apply field mappings, and return transformed responses to upstream applications.
  • Support CL ETL Batch processing that consumes PolicyCenter transaction data from IDS Oracle after IIB/ACE processing and creates downstream extracts and statistical records.
  • Deliver and support integrations and data feeds for business and regulatory consumers including Billing, Commissions, General Ledger, ISO/TICO, HSB, ISO/Verisk, WC PICS/Unit Stat, print, inforce, ECIF, AMI, SaRA, and PAM.
  • Provide production support, issue analysis, and ongoing optimization for integration jobs, runtime behavior, and data processing outcomes.

Key responsibilities
  • Own and enhance ACE integration solutions, including instance-level application support, updates, and alignment with enterprise integration standards.
  • Analyze business and system requirements and translate them into API contracts, request/response mappings, transformation logic, and integration error handling.
  • Develop and troubleshoot data mappings between PolicyCenter XML or service payloads and downstream schemas used by internal services, print, vendor feeds, and reporting outputs.
  • Support ETL workflows that extract, transform, and publish data for line-of-business processing, statistical records, and operational file exchanges.
  • Work with Oracle-based IDS data structures, job control metadata, and environment-specific parameters used to monitor, troubleshoot, and rerun processing flows.
  • Support job scheduling and operational processing in a UNIX environment using established batch frameworks and Perl-based job control patterns.
  • Partner with product, testing, and downstream business or technical teams to ensure integrations are reliable, supportable, and aligned to policy transaction needs.

Candidate skills and experience
  • Strong integration engineering background with hands-on experience in IBM App Connect Enterprise or comparable middleware/integration platforms, including message routing, protocol connectivity, and data transformation.
  • Experience with API and service integrations, including token-based authentication, REST request construction, header management, endpoint invocation, response parsing, and upstream response mapping.
  • Strong data mapping and transformation skills across XML, JSON, and downstream record or file layouts.
  • Experience working with batch data pipelines, file-based integrations, and downstream data feeds for operational or reporting consumers.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle data environments, SQL-based troubleshooting, and environment-specific configuration or access patterns for development through production support.
  • Understanding of deployment, security, and configuration concepts for integration runtimes.
  • Experience supporting production incidents, job failures, data issues, and operational reruns in complex enterprise environments.

Preferred experience
  • Experience with Commercial Lines PolicyCenter integrations and transaction data flows into downstream platforms.
  • Familiarity with IDS Oracle structures and CLS ETL Batch processing patterns.
  • Experience supporting vendor, bureau, or regulatory feeds such as ISO, Verisk, NCCI/CDX, HSB, or premium audit/reporting processes.
  • Experience with UNIX-based batch operations, scheduling tools, and scripting for file handling, job control, or audit/reporting support.

Candidate profile

The strongest candidate will be a technically deep integration engineer who is comfortable moving between real-time API integration and batch data processing. They should be able to understand how PolicyCenter-originated transaction data flows through ACE into IDS and onward through ETL jobs to downstream consumers, then diagnose issues across mappings, interfaces, runtime configuration, and operational processing. They should also be effective in support situations, able to trace issues through jobs, status tables, files, and service responses while partnering across product, testing, and dependent teams. This role also calls for a Next Level performer: someone who shows ownership, initiative, continuous learning, strong partnership, and a bias for improving outcomes rather than only maintaining the status quo. The candidate should actively adopt, use, and incorporate AI resources where appropriate to improve analysis, engineering efficiency, troubleshooting, test support, documentation, and overall delivery effectiveness.

Success in the role

Success in this role means delivering stable, supportable integrations; improving the quality and reliability of ACE and ETL flows; ensuring downstream consumers receive accurate, timely, and well-mapped data needed for operational, financial, print, and regulatory processing; and demonstrating Next Level performance through proactive ownership and practical use of AI resources to improve team effectiveness and delivery outcomes.

This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio, Des Moines, Iowa, or Scottsdale, Arizona office 2 days (Monday & Tuesday) per week. Remote internal associates may also be considered.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.
