Full Job Description
What Makes You a Great Fit

Our mission at Pebl is to simplify global employment, enabling companies to hire, manage, and retain talent anywhere in the world. Our AI & Knowledge team is building Alfie, our conversational AI assistant, and rethinking what it means for software to work with you, not just for you. We're looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join the team and grow into a core contributor on the systems that power Alfie.

This is a full-stack role that leans backend: most of your work will be in the APIs, data models, and infrastructure behind our LLM-based product, but you'll also touch the frontend where a feature needs it end-to-end. You don't need to have shipped agentic systems before - you need strong fundamentals, real curiosity about how these systems work, and the drive to learn fast alongside engineers who've been doing this for years. This role reports to the Engineering Manager, with day-to-day work led by our Staff Software Engineer.

How You'll Make an Impact:
  • Build and ship backend features and services using TypeScript or Python, Postgres, and AWS (Lambda, Fargate, API Gateway, S3, etc.) in a serverless environment.
  • Pick up frontend work (React/TypeScript) when a feature calls for it, and get comfortable enough with the full stack to see a feature through end-to-end.
  • Work closely with senior engineers to learn how our LLM-based systems are designed - prompt handling, tool/function calling, observability - and start contributing to that work yourself.
  • Write clean, well-tested code, and treat code review feedback as a fast track to leveling up.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver features end-to-end.
  • Help troubleshoot issues in production, building comfort with both standard backend debugging and AI-specific failure modes (bad model output, latency, dropped tool calls).
  • Stay curious about emerging tools and practices in backend and AI engineering, and bring what you learn back to the team.

Let's Connect If You Have:
  • 2-3 years of professional software engineering experience, with backend-heavy work.
  • Proficient in TypeScript or Python, with real experience building database-backed features on a relational database (Postgres or similar) - comfortable working with schemas and writing the queries a feature needs, even if deep query optimization isn't your focus yet.
  • Have built real features with React/TypeScript or similar - you don't need deep frontend expertise, but you can pick it up and ship something when a feature calls for it.
  • Solid CS fundamentals - you can reason about data structures, APIs, and system design even if you haven't built these systems at scale yet.
  • Real hands-on experience building something with an LLM - a project, a prototype, a class assignment, a hackathon entry. You should understand the basics of prompt design and how/why an agent calls a tool; "I've used ChatGPT" isn't what we mean. You don't need professional agentic-systems experience - you do need to have actually built with these models, not just read about them.
  • A lean mindset - you focus on delivering value, ask good questions, and iterate quickly on feedback.
  • Comfort working collaboratively in a remote, fast-paced environment, and a genuine desire to grow into a senior backend engineer.

  • Parental Leave - Support for growing families.
  • Health and Dental Insurance - Where applicable, to cover you and your loved ones.
  • Retirement Savings + Employee Incentive Plan - Plan for the future while sharing our success.
