THE ROLE IN A NUTSHELL

Base Salary: CAD $82,639.00 - 103,229.00

GreenShield is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Canadians. Our digital products are used by members, employers, HR administrators, providers, insurers, and benefits administrators to access services, understand benefits, manage care, and make important health decisions.
We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer to build and operate systems that directly shape how customers experience our services. This is a hands-on engineering role on products used in real, consequential moments, where quality, reliability, latency, and availability are immediately visible to the people who rely on them.
The systems we build are expected to deliver a first-class customer experience. Low latency, high availability, security, and the ability to operate at scale are baseline expectations. Any degradation in the customer experience is treated as a defect to be understood, measured, and resolved.

The Role

As a Software Engineer III, you will deliver end-to-end product improvements across user experience, backend services, APIs, databases, and cloud-based systems. You will work closely with Product, Design, Data, Security, Operations, and other engineers to turn customer problems into reliable production software.
This is not a role focused only on writing code. You will be expected to understand the problem you are solving, clarify what success looks like, and make engineering decisions grounded in evidence. You will use data, instrumentation, customer signals, and operational metrics to validate assumptions, evaluate trade-offs, and improve the systems you help build.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, test, and operate full stack features that meet a high bar for reliability, security, performance, accessibility, and customer experience.
  • Own your work through production, including system behavior, observability, supportability, incident follow-up, maintainability, and continuous improvement.
  • Add instrumentation, review metrics, and use data to guide decisions, validate assumptions, and improve outcomes.
  • Work across user interfaces, APIs, backend services, databases, integrations, and cloud-based systems.
  • Make pragmatic engineering decisions that balance delivery speed, operational risk, maintainability, and customer impact.
  • Contribute to operational excellence through useful logs, metrics, alerts, dashboards, runbooks, automated tests, and production readiness practices.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Data, Security, Operations, and other engineers to clarify requirements, surface risks, and make trade-offs explicit.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • 3+ years of experience building software systems across modern web applications, backend services, APIs, databases, and production environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Full stack experience with technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms. Experience with GCP, NestJS, NextJS, or similar technologies is an asset.
  • Experience delivering customer-facing features and supporting them after launch, with attention to reliability, quality, security, performance, and customer experience.
  • Sound engineering judgment and a willingness to make decisions using evidence from metrics, instrumentation, production behavior, and customer signals.
  • Commitment to operational excellence. You build systems that are observable, testable, maintainable, and able to operate under real-world conditions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, product managers, designers, and operational partners.
  • A high-ownership mindset, strong follow-through, curiosity, and a commitment to improving the systems you work on.

Working Style

You succeed in this role if you are energized by systems that matter, customers who depend on them, and teams that care about raising the bar. You think in terms of reliable service, measurable outcomes, and continuous improvement, and you stay engaged until the problem is resolved.
