The Team

The purpose of the GCME Securities Operations Technology team is to provide technology support for the business applications and related processes and key technology vendors that underpin the activities of Global Wholesale Operations (GWO) both in Toronto and globally.

Vendors and core applications include Broadridge BPS / IMPACT / GLOSS books of record and their related Bank interfaces, Vermeg / Colline collateral management platform, and NIAD new issue trading platform among others.

The Role

The Senior Manager, Application Development leads and oversees Application Development under the GBME Securities Operations Technology portfolio ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures. Manages the development and break-fix/L3 team. Contributes to the overall success of Technology for Global Banking and Markets by ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives.

  • Manage and lead a geographically dispersed team. Recruit qualified staff; identify and address training and development needs. Monitor and assess individual and team capabilities / commitment / productivity / performance through timely completion of reviews, Performance Appraisals and Development Plans. Recognize and reward achievement, promoting group morale and cooperation. Review and act on employee surveys and other relevant feedback.
  • Responsible for Data Integration of multiple external/internal platforms to bank's data platforms and distribution of data across various business lines.
  • Lead and drive a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Ensure application development is performed in a professional, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Effective analysis, design, development, and delivery of high availability & reliability applications which utilize different technology stacks (including Python, Java, Spring framework, Kafka, NoSQL, Kubernetes etc.) and orchestration tools (including Tidal and Airflow).
  • Engage a broad range of stakeholders across Front, Middle, and Back office, Product Control, Risk management, Application Development, and Infrastructure teams to tailor development to business requirements.
  • Show initiative in recommending innovative solutions and continuous improvements to the existing processes.
  • Ensure that deliveries meet integrity, quality, performance, and reliability requirements by building automated testing and regression suites and use of DevOps principles.
  • Collaborate with SROs and SRE (Regional and Global) for resiliency and recovery applications.
  • Develop technical specifications for certain critical/complex modules as needed or review technical specifications from other developers.
  • Develop certain critical/complex modules as needed and assist other developers particularly with more critical/complex modules.Acts as a lead for any Audit and Regulatory efforts related to Application Development, Change Management, and related areas and for Applications under ownership.
  • Identify critical delivery issues and escalate them accordingly.
  • Coordinate infrastructure needs for requisitioning Cloud based infrastructure, databases and assist actively with documentation requirements covering architecture, security and operational readiness.
  • Create an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values and Code of Conduct while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Build a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviors; communicate vison/values/business strategy; and manage succession and development planning for the team.


Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
  • Expert knowledge of Core Java, or any other Object-oriented language such as C++, some scripting language (preferably Python) with good working knowledge of Web application development and related technologies.
  • 5-7 years of experience managing a team of developers (Team Size: 5-15 Developers) including coaching and managing career development of team members.
  • Good experience working with databases such as SQL server, Oracle with expert SQL knowledge.
  • 7-10 years of application development experience at a financial institution.
  • In-depth knowledge of various technologies, data structures, algorithms, software design, and core programming concepts.
  • Experience working with Agile methodologies and applying agile principles to drive iterative development.
  • Expert level knowledge of Operating system concepts specifically Linux and Windows.
  • Experience in project effort estimation, Cost estimation and resource management.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required, advanced degree preferred.
