This position is not fully remote and will require up to 3 days a week in the office.

This position provides a life/work balance with typically a 40-hour work week, and travel limited to training (e.g., conferences/courses).

Purpose

The Enterprise Network Engineer I supports the Edge and Core Networking team to design, build, and operate the university's enterprise and departmental networks, while providing advanced technical expertise and troubleshooting for departmental customers. Develop, deploy and operate systems and processes.

Responsibilities
  • Under supervision plan, design, implement, and maintain the university's enterprise network and telecom systems to meet performance objectives and Service Level Agreements.
  • Maintain good relationships with Enterprise Technology and unit representatives to understand end-user network needs to maintain classrooms, R&D labs, and university auxiliary venues.
  • Assist with evaluation of new network technologies, proof of concept projects, process standardization, and configuration automation.
  • Provide escalation support for standard network design, troubleshooting, and after-hours on-call support. Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157.
  • Raise visibility of issues to extended team members with automation processes, fault detection, standardized operations, and life cycle management.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen, resident, or officially recognized asylee - Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience.
  • Two years of experience supporting enterprise or campus network environments, including routing, switching and wireless.
  • Experience troubleshooting network faults and providing customer-facing technical support.
  • Current Class C operator driver license required, with driving history review required prior to hire.


Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Cisco routers, switches and wireless platforms, including IOS and IOS-XE.
  • Experience with campus Wi-Fi design, survey or deployment.
  • Exposure to network automation or scripting (Python, Ansible).
  • Higher education or other large multi-tenant environment experience.


Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" Operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. The driving record will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a university owned vehicle.

Salary Range

$80,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Data center / telecom environment.
  • May work around standard office conditions.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Use of manual dexterity used for equipment repairs, installations and removals.
  • Lifting and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Routine climbing of stairs/ladders.
  • Identify color coded cabling systems such as 568A or 568B.
  • Work in confined spaces such as crawl spaces, basements, attic/ceilings, cable chases and equipment rooms.
  • Work in extreme temperatures, loud noises, around chemicals, around airborne particulates and around electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Occasional driving of a university vehicle.
  • Work performed on concurrent multiple projects under pressure of rigid deadlines and/or time limitations.
  • May require occasional extended work hours or on-call obligation.


Work Shift

Monday - Friday flexible between 7am-6pm, Occasional nights/weekends maybe required. After-hours on-call rotation.
