Established New York-based boutique law firm is seeking a Comptroller to oversee the firm's day-to-day accounting and billing functions. This is a full-charge accounting/bookkeeping role reporting to firm leadership and overseeing a billing team member. The Comptroller will work closely with attorneys, administrative staff, and external accounting professionals and will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and improving accounting processes.
Responsibilities: - Partner with firm leadership on accounting, billing, and financial matters
- Manage and maintain the firm's accounting and billing systems, including daily use of Elite 3E
- Handle daily accounts payable and accounts receivable activities
- Process trust account transactions and maintain trust ledgers and other accounting records
- Manage daily banking activities, including deposits, wires, ACH payments/transfers, and Positive Pay
- Monitor compliance with internal accounting controls and firm policies
- Ensure proper general ledger account coding and reconcile/allocate expenses to clients and matters
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations, trust account three-way reconciliations, adjusting journal entries, and monthly financial reporting
- Provide financial information and supporting documentation to the firm's outside accountants for tax estimates, financial statement reviews, tax filings, and K-1 preparation
- Prepare and distribute 1099s as required
- Work with attorneys and staff to research and resolve billing and accounting issues
- Communicate with external vendors and professional service providers, including accountants, CPAs, and banking contacts
- Identify and implement improvements to accounting, billing, and financial reporting processes
- Oversee and work closely with billing personnel
- Assist with additional accounting and financial projects as needed
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
- 7+ years of hands-on accounting/bookkeeping experience within a law firm
- Advanced experience with Elite 3E is required as well as Microsoft Office, including strong Excel skills
- Strong knowledge of trust accounting involving retainers and other client funds, including familiarity with applicable bar requirements and audits
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Experience with legal billing and e-billing systems
- Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively with attorneys, firm leadership, staff, and external professionals
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and meet deadlines
- Adaptable and comfortable working in a hands-on accounting environment
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and reliability
