The Vice-President, Enterprise Data Engineering is accountable for data engineering excellence as a core enterprise discipline at CIBC. This role leads the Enterprise Data Engineering Chapter, setting standards, developing talent, and ensuring consistent, high-quality data engineering practices across all business-aligned delivery teams. Operating within CIBC’s agile-at-scale model, this role drives consistency and promotes standardized best practices for data engineers embedded in product and delivery teams, ensuring the application of consistent engineering patterns, reliability practices, and governance-by-design. The role partners closely with the Data Platforms organization and is a foundational enabler of trusted analytics, AI, and enterprise decision-making.

What You’ll be Doing

Data Engineering Craft & Standards

  • Own and evolve enterprise data engineering standards, patterns, and reference architectures.

  • Develop and maintain ELT/ETL frameworks with embedded data quality, metadata, and lineage.

  • Oversee data contracts, schema evolution, and backward compatibility.

  • Implement reusable ingestion, transformation, and serving patterns for structured and unstructured data.

  • Partner with business leaders to build data products enabling scalable, data-driven decision making in an agentic world.

Reliability, Quality & Operations

  • Establish reliability engineering practices for data systems, including SRE-inspired monitoring, SLAs/SLOs, alerting, and incident management.

  • Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure engineering accountability for data quality and trust.

Talent, Capability & Chapter Leadership

  • Lead the enterprise Data Engineering Chapter, including role definitions, career paths, and skills development.

  • Raise the technical bar for data engineers across CIBC.

  • Coach and mentor senior engineering leaders and practitioners.

Governance by Design

  • Partner with Data & AI Governance to ensure privacy, security, and regulatory controls are embedded directly into engineering standards and pipelines.

Platform Partnership

  • Work closely with other senior leaders in the team to influence platform capabilities based on engineering needs.

  • Ensure strong alignment between platform evolution and engineering patterns.

  • Drive reuse and reduce fragmentation across the enterprise.

What We’re Looking For

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field is strongly preferred.

  • 12+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, data architecture, or related technology leadership roles.

  • Significant experience managing large-scale data engineering organizations in complex, regulated environments (preferably financial services, banking, or similar sectors).

  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing enterprise data engineering standards, frameworks, and best practices.

  • Mastery in large-scale data engineering, distributed systems, and advanced data management practices.

  • Deep understanding of ELT/ETL frameworks, data contracts, schema evolution, and data quality management.

  • Proven ability to set and evolve enterprise standards, reference architectures, and reusable engineering patterns.

  • Strong background in software engineering (Python, Java, Scala) and advanced SQL.

  • Skilled in implementing reliability engineering practices, including SRE principles, monitoring, SLAs/SLOs, incident management, and continuous improvement.

  • Experience defining roles, career paths, and skills development for data engineers.

  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and elevate senior engineering leaders and practitioners.

  • Ability to embed privacy, security, and regulatory controls into engineering standards and pipelines (“governance by design”).

  • Strong collaboration skills to partner with Data Platforms, Data & AI Governance, and business-aligned delivery teams.
