Full Job Description
The City of Edmonton's Development Services Branch is hiring an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join their Planning Coordination Unit. Reporting to a Senior Transportation Engineer, this role involves reviewing land development applications-such as statutory plans, rezoning, and road closures-to support the implementation of the City Plan. The EIT will evaluate transportation infrastructure impacts, provide engineering recommendations, and collaborate with diverse partners, including developers, city staff, and the public, to balance project staging and corporate objectives within a growing, complex urban environment.

What will you do?

  • Under the direct supervision of the Senior Transportation Engineer, you will:
  • Develop transportation infrastructure solutions and evaluate and quantify impacts to provide short- and long-term recommendations
  • Review Transportation Impact Assessments (TIAs) for compliance with safety, transit, and design standards
  • Support Senior Engineers on sensitive or complex decisions by reviewing municipal priorities and emerging industry trends
  • Prepare written documentation for committee reports, public inquiries, and technical recommendations
  • Build collaborative relationships with internal and external partners to deliver customer service and engineering solutions
  • Review and recommend approval for concept plans, engineering drawings, and permanent road or alley closure requests
  • Liaise with various City departments and external agencies to ensure integrated planning and engineering alignment
  • Draft and review amendments for transportation-related bylaws, policies, and procedures
  • Perform periodic site inspections to verify development requirements and standards
  • Participate in public engagement activities, team meetings, and other assigned duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation Engineering
  • Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment


Assets:

  • Experience preparing or evaluating land development applications from a transportation perspective (including Municipal Development Plan, Area Structure Plan, and Neighborhood Structure Plan amendments, subdivisions, and rezoning) and Transportation Impact Assessments (TIAs)
  • Knowledge of and experience with Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering, as well as applicable design and construction standards, specifications, bylaws, and legislation
  • A preferred understanding of municipal regulatory frameworks, including the Municipal Government Act, the City Plan, and the City of Edmonton Zoning Bylaw

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance


Conditions of employment:

  • Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $35.60 - $43.271 (Hourly); $74,332.80 - $90,349.85 (Annually)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
