Role PurposeCorning Incorporated is seeking a
Senior Staff Engineer, Standards to join our
Global Technology & Industry Standards team in our
Corning or Painted Post, NY offices. This role includes
approximately 25% travel, including some international travel, and may occasionally require flexibility for global meetings across time zones.
Relocation assistance is available for this position.
This is a unique,
externally facing role focused on industry standards that influence how products are tested, specified, and adopted in the market. Working with global standards organizations, industry groups, customers, third-party organizations, and internal stakeholders, you will help shape requirements, test procedures, interoperability expectations, and industry frameworks across a range of technologies. This role could be a strong fit for someone with experience in
standards development, product or application engineering, technical strategy, compliance, or other industry-facing technical roles who can connect technical detail to business impact, build alignment across stakeholders, and influence outcomes in a complex global environment.
Key Responsibilities- Own and manage a portfolio of Corning business interests across domestic and international standards organizations and relevant industry consortia
- Partner with business, technology, and commercial stakeholders to develop and execute standards strategies aligned with business goals, market access needs, and emerging technology priorities
- Monitor external standards activity, committee developments, and industry trends to identify risks, opportunities, and actions needed to support Corning's interests
- Translate technical, commercial, and competitive inputs into clear standards positions, recommendations, and deliverables
- Draft, review, and submit technical contributions, ballot responses, proposals, and meeting summaries on behalf of Corning
- Coordinate subject matter experts and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure Corning's positions are aligned and effectively represented in external forums
- Prepare strategic briefings and updates for business and technology leadership on standards developments and their potential business impact
Minimum Qualifications and Skills- Bachelor's degree in science or engineering in a relevant discipline such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, optical, or materials science
- 7+ years of professional experience in a technical, standards development, or related strategic role
- Ability to understand technical and business considerations and translate them into practical standards strategies and actions
- Experience working across cross-functional teams and building alignment among technical, commercial, and business stakeholders
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing technical documents, proposals, summaries, and presentations for different audiences
- Ability to influence stakeholders, advocate for positions, and build relationships across diverse stakeholder groups in multicultural environments
Preferred Qualifications and Skills- Master's degree or higher in a relevant discipline
- Prior direct experience participating in external standardization bodies or industry consortia
- Experience in telecommunications, mobile consumer electronics, display, automotive, solar, materials science, or a related industry
- Experience in product engineering, application engineering, compliance, certification, or other industry-facing technical roles
- Familiarity with organizations or frameworks such as IEC, IEEE, ITU, TIA, ASTM, UL, Intertek, NEMA, or similar standards and conformity ecosystems
- Familiarity with IP policies, FRAND obligations, and antitrust compliance in the context of standards development
This position does not support immigration sponsorship. The range for this position is $133,911.00 - $184,128.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
