Allata is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join a client product team and provide technical direction across a cross-functional engineering squad.
This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys staying close to the code while having a broader impact through architecture, technical standards, and team development. You'll work closely with product and engineering stakeholders to turn complex requirements into well-structured solutions, anticipate technical risks, and create an environment where engineers can deliver high-quality software consistently.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical depth with leadership and communication skills, can make pragmatic architectural decisions, and is comfortable shaping how a team adopts emerging technologies-including AI-assisted development.
Responsibilities:- Design and guide features across the frontend and backend architecture, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with technical standards.
- Partner with Product to break epics into well-scoped, estimable stories and identify cross-service dependencies and technical risks early.
- Lead code reviews and maintain a high bar for code quality, automated testing, API contracts, error handling, performance, and maintainability.
- Own and evolve shared frontend libraries and backend common components.
Drive reliability and release safety, including observability, feature-flagged rollouts, database migrations, CI/CD, containerization, and cloud infrastructure. - Help define and maintain engineering practices around AI-assisted development, including guidelines for AI-generated code, review practices, and appropriate use cases.
- Identify where AI tools can meaningfully accelerate development while ensuring their output meets the team's standards for quality, security, and maintainability.
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, architectural discussions, and knowledge sharing.
- Collaborate with other engineering squads to coordinate integrations, shared dependencies, and cross-team technical decisions.
- Remain hands-on and contribute to implementation when needed, particularly on complex or high-impact technical areas.
Hard Skills - Must have:- Experience leading engineers, owning architecture, or serving in a comparable technical leadership role.
- Expert-level experience with Angular and TypeScript.
- Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot.
- Solid experience with MongoDB and document-oriented data models.
- Strong understanding of event-driven architectures and AWS services such as SQS/SNS.
- Experience designing and working with distributed systems and microservices.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, API design, testing strategies, and engineering best practices.
- Demonstrated experience raising engineering quality through code review, technical standards, and development practices.
- Substantial hands-on experience with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar.
- Ability to articulate the benefits, limitations, and trade-offs of AI-assisted development to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have:- Experience with Nx and monorepo architectures.
- Experience with AWS CDK.
- Experience with Buddy or similar CI/CD platforms.
- Experience facilitating Agile refinement and estimation sessions.
Soft Skills:- Strong technical leadership and the ability to influence without relying solely on formal authority.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical decisions into clear recommendations.
- Strong ownership and accountability for technical outcomes.
- Pragmatic decision-maker who can balance technical quality, delivery timelines, and product priorities.
- Comfortable facilitating technical discussions and helping teams reach clear decisions.
- Strong mentoring and coaching mindset.
- Collaborative approach to working across teams and disciplines.
- Curious and proactive about emerging technologies and their practical application in software engineering.
- Able to identify risks early and communicate them clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
