Job Summary
This role contributes to Starbucks' success by delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality technologies
that support the Starbucks Engineering Platform. As a senior engineer, you will collaborate with
platform engineering teams to plan, deliver, and operate solutions, while shaping technology strategy
and roadmaps for new and existing capabilities. This position requires technical leadership, deep domain
expertise, and broad platform knowledge. All work aligns with Starbucks' guiding principles.
Key Responsibilities
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
• Build strong cross-functional relationships with business and technology partners.
• Support development teams by resolving issues promptly and accurately.
• Design and maintain build and release processes.
• Manage and collaborate with technology vendors to meet business objectives.
• Research and recommend standards, products, and services.
• Ensure application and infrastructure solutions are stable, secure, and compliant.
• Implement technologies following Information Security principles for sensitive data.
• Provide high-availability operational support and automate solutions.
• Develop telemetry and monitoring capabilities to ensure system performance and continuity.
• Maintain system configurations and baselines to support secure development practices.
• Uphold company policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., PCI).
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
• 4-8 years of professional software development experience.
Technical Proficiency
• Experience in platform engineering and product development teams.
• Strong understanding of application architecture, infrastructure, and security.
• Ability to quickly learn cloud-based technologies (e.g., managed data services, eventing, secrets
management).
• Expertise in AWS or Azure cloud computing concepts.
• Hands-on coding and code review skills (Golang preferred).
• Knowledge of:
o System architecture and design
o Data storage (Postgres, DynamoDB, Cassandra)
o Platform as a Service
o Monitoring, auditing, and operations
• Experience with orchestration/configuration management and CI/CD tools (Docker/Kubernetes,
AWS CodeBuild/CodePipeline, ArgoCD, Terraform, Datadog).
• Proficient in Linux containers, cloud networking, and incident troubleshooting.
Domain Proficiency
• Deep understanding of cloud platforms and application capabilities, APIs, and process flows.
• Awareness of business context and functional aspects of solutions.
• Contribute to platform strategy, operational processes, and security frameworks.
• Develop and deploy solutions using Agile and continuous delivery practices.
Interpersonal Skills
• Ability to collaborate and influence cross-functional teams.
• Strong communication skills for technical and business audiences.
• Skilled in negotiation, strategic planning, and decision-making.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
• 5+ years of experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
• Proficiency in languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, Go, Perl, or Ruby.
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems and client-server architectures.
• Ability to debug, optimize, and automate tasks.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements (SOX, PCI, HIPAA).
• Experience managing high-capacity, mission-critical environments.
• Strong database knowledge and networking proficiency (TCP/IP, DNS, routing).
• Experience supporting 24x7 production environments.

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
