Software Engineer II and Sr. Software Engineer (Multiple Positions) -Windows Engineering Systems Core Build Team

Windows + Devices powers experiences for over a billion users worldwide, building the platforms and products that create experiences across Microsoft and leading Windows and Surface products through deep partnership across the company and with OEM partners. The Windows Engineering System enables Windows engineers to design, code, build, validate, and ship at massive scale, securely and with high quality.The Core Build team creates and operates the build orchestration, analysis, and developer tooling that enables engineers across Microsoft to produce Windows and other foundational software at significant scale. Our systems connect source, dependencies, compilers, security controls, artifacts, and diagnostics across a large and evolving engineering ecosystem.We partner with product and Engineering Systems teams to make builds faster, more reliable, secure, observable, and easier to use. Our work spans modern services and pipelines as well as mission-critical native tools and long-lived codebases, with improvements benefiting thousands of developers and millions of build actions.

We are hiring at the Software Engineer II and Senior Software Engineer levels for engineers who combine deep technical judgment with practical execution. You will work hands-on across complex systems, turn ambiguous problems into durable technical solutions, and help evolve a critical engineering platform while maintaining compatibility and operational continuity.

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer II and Sr. Software Engineer on Windows Engineering Systems Core Build Team, you will:
  • Lead and contribute to the design and delivery of multi-quarter initiatives that modernize core build tools, services, and workflows while improving reliability, performance, security, maintainability, and developer experience.
  • Diagnose complex failures across build orchestration, toolchains, infrastructure, dependencies, and artifact production, driving root-cause fixes and systemic reliability improvements.
  • Partner with product teams and Engineering Systems organizations to integrate new workflows while protecting compatibility, scale, and operational continuity.
  • Establish measurable success criteria, telemetry, and operational signals that make regressions and customer impact visible.
  • Advance secure software-supply-chain practices, including dependency governance, provenance, artifact integrity, and compliance automation.
  • Use and improve AI-assisted engineering workflows for investigation, implementation, review, and operational response while maintaining solid validation and engineering judgment.
  • Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, debugging, and project leadership, helping build the technical capability of the broader team.


Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, C#, Java, or TypeScript.
    • OR equivalent experience.

Additional or preferred qualifications

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, C#, Java, or TypeScript.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Windows internals, native development, and build technologies such as C++, C#, PowerShell, MSBuild, BuildXL, Bazel, distributed build execution, or distributed caching.
  • Experience with developer infrastructure, build systems, compilers, CI/CD platforms, dependency management, or large-scale distributed services, including tools such as Azure DevOps pipelines or GitHub Actions.
  • Experience designing, building, operating, or modernizing software and production services at scale, including incident response, reliability, and compatibility considerations.
  • Experience using telemetry and diagnostic technologies such as Kusto/KQL, Azure Data Explorer, Application Insights, or similar tools to troubleshoot complex systems and improve engineering-system reliability or developer productivity.
  • Experience leading complex technical initiatives across teams, communicating technical tradeoffs and decisions, and mentoring engineers.
  • Knowledge of secure development and software-supply-chain practices, with experience applying AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve engineering quality or productivity.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
