Full Job Description

Software Development Manager, Developer Portal- Hybrid, Cary, North Carolina

About the job

The APIs & Developer Experience (APIDX) team is looking for a Software Development Manager to lead the engineers who build and operate developer.sas.com and the Azure infrastructure behind it. Our team owns the front door to the SAS API portfolio – the place where customers, partners, and internal developers go to find out what our APIs can do, learn how they work, and make their first successful call.

This is a chance to shape a public-facing product at the moment its audience is changing. Developer portals are being reinvented for AI agents as well as human developers, and you will lead both halves of that shift – making the site legible to machines, and helping a small, high-trust team use AI to build faster without giving up quality. You will see directly how customers experience SAS APIs, and you will have real latitude to decide what the portal should become.

As a Software Development Manager, you will:

  • Be responsible for day-to-day team operations and priorities, including hiring, training, delegating work assignments, reviewing performance, giving feedback, and supporting each team member toward their career objectives.
  • Own the delivery roadmap for the developer.sas.com front end, balancing new capability, site quality, and technical debt, then work with developers to scope and refine planned work and communicate status and priorities to upper management.
  • Own the portal’s Azure footprint – hosting, content delivery, networking, identity integration with SAS Profile and Okta, secrets and certificate management, patching, monitoring, disaster recovery, and cloud spend – and be accountable for site availability, performance, and accessibility.
  • Work with developer advocacy, product management, and customers to understand requirements, and establish the portal metrics – traffic, search success, time-to-first-call, and developer satisfaction – that turn developer feedback into prioritized work.
  • Manage the dependency on the internal content and API reference publishing team, including shared interface definitions, release coordination, and escalation paths, and collaborate with other technical managers to ensure quality and consistency across components and products.
  • Lead adoption of AI-assisted development on the team, evaluating tools, establishing effective usage patterns, and measuring impact on delivery speed and code quality, while setting responsible guardrails for code review, data handling, and intellectual property.
  • Drive the site’s agent readiness, including machine-readable content and structured data, semantic and server-rendered markup that agents can parse, stable and predictable URLs, discovery artifacts for LLM consumers, and bot access and rate-limiting policy at the edge.
  • Be encouraged to participate in open-source projects on behalf of SAS.
  • Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization’s secure software development goals.
  • Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of eight years of related programming or testing experience, including one year of project lead, supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience building and operating public-facing web applications with a modern front-end framework such as React.
  • Experience deploying and operating applications on a major public cloud, preferably Microsoft Azure, using infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Practical experience with more than one programming language (JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, Go).
  • Experience leading development and delivery at the enterprise system level using Agile practices and tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

Additional competencies, knowledge and skills

  • Leading Change – Driving the organizational and cultural changes needed to achieve strategic objectives, catalyzing new approaches to improve results, and helping others overcome resistance to change.
  • Strategic Planning – Identifying the key issues and relationships relevant to a long-range goal and committing to a course of action based on facts, available resources, constraints, and organizational values.
  • Inspiring Others – Motivating individuals toward higher levels of performance that are aligned with the organization’s vision and values.
  • Hands-on familiarity with Azure services for web hosting, such as App Service or Static Web Apps, Front Door or CDN, Key Vault, Application Insights, and Entra ID, and with infrastructure as code such as Terraform or Bicep.
  • Demonstrated use of AI coding assistants and agentic development tools in real delivery work, with a clear point of view on where they help and where they do not.
  • Understanding of what makes a modern website agent friendly, including structured data, rendering strategy and crawlability, machine-readable discovery files, and conventions such as MCP.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and OpenAPI, web analytics and SEO, and identity standards such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect as used in developer registration.

World-class benefits

Highlights include...

  • Comprehensive medical, prescription, dental and vision plans.
  • Medical plan options include:
    • PPO with low annual deductible and copays.

  • Onsite Health Care Center (HQ) that’s free to employees and family members enrolled in the PPO plan. There's a pharmacy too! Not local to HQ? The pharmacy will ship prescriptions for no additional charge!
  • An industry-leading 401k plan.
  • Tuition Assistance Program and programs and resources to support your development
