Full Job Description
The Canada Tax Content team is looking for a motivated Software Developer 1 to help build and maintain Canada's leading tax products. This is an entry-level, growth-oriented role for an engineer developing proficiency across the full software development lifecycle - you'll deliver well-defined tasks under close guidance from senior team members, building foundational skills in both software engineering and tax content along the way.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze well-defined, lower-complexity tax issues under guidance, escalating anything beyond clearly scoped work to senior team members.
  • Translate well-defined, small tasks into functional tax logic (C#/C++/Java) by orchestrating AI agents for code generation - writing clear prompts and structuring context files.
  • Participate in compliance requirement discussions with product owners and senior engineers and tax analysts, building an understanding of how requirements translate into technical tasks.
  • Write code meant to be read and reused by the team, including code generated with AI tools; validate functionality through automated and manual tests (unit tests, TDD); participate in code reviews as a source of learning engineering patterns and practices.
  • Use logs, metrics, and traces to investigate well-defined defects/bugs, applying structured debugging techniques and AI assistants for hypothesis generation, with support from senior engineers on more complex issues.
  • Follow established standards for the technical requirements of tax content; begin building familiarity with the team's best-practices documentation.
  • Actively participate in Agile/SCRUM ceremonies (sprint planning, backlog grooming, estimation).
  • Use AI productivity tools to accelerate learning and validate outcomes - orchestrating AI agents for code generation and applying the same review standard to AI-generated code as to peer-written code before committing.
  • Build growing awareness of how your work connects to customer and tax impact: learn to interpret basic customer signals (e.g., telemetry, usage data, support tickets) and articulate the 'why' behind assigned tasks.
  • Actively seek feedback from senior engineers and tax analysts, learn from mistakes, and build learning plans that grow your ability.

Qualifications
  • BS/MS in Computer Science and/or Tax + equivalent experience, or recent graduate.
  • 1-2 years developing software in C#/C++ and/or Java, including foundational object-oriented design concepts (coursework, internships, or professional experience).
  • 1-2 years of experience in tax research/analysis/tax preparation; a passion to build foundational knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial tax law is preferred.
  • Growing understanding of software engineering fundamentals and the SDLC.
  • Exposure to writing unit tests; willingness to learn Test-Driven Development practices.
  • Comfort using AI coding assistants and productivity tools to accelerate learning - e.g., structuring prompts and context for AI-generated code, and validating AI output before committing.
  • Self-starter attitude, willingness to learn, and eagerness to take ownership of well-defined tasks with growing independence.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Agile Development, Scrum, and/or Programming methodologies is a plus.
