Senior UX Designer

This is a remote position.

The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.

Primary Responsibilities

Designer III serves as an emerging individual contributor within a team, expanding your leadership, guidance, and mentoring skills. With the support and guidance of leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule, and delivery requirements. You will interact with stakeholders and utilize influential skills to drive improvements in design processes and practices. Primary expectations of a Designer III include:
  • Deliver UX design work across program workstreams including discovery artifacts, user flows, wireframes, low and high fidelity prototypes, and usability testing plans in Figma using federal Design System components
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on accessibility tools and techniques, annotating Figma designs with keyboard navigation, ARIA patterns, focus management, and screen reader labels before sprint planning
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews, workflow observations, usability testing, and competitive analysis, synthesizing findings into actionable artifacts such as personas, journey maps, storyboards, and research reports
  • Develop and implement design test cases and test plans, supporting validation of designs against WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 compliance standards
  • Contribute to the Design System component library, proposing new patterns and visual design artifacts through the established governance workflow in collaboration with senior designers and frontend engineers
  • Collaborate with engineers, QA, product owners, and accessibility specialists to validate designs for technical feasibility and Section 508 compliance before sprint commitment
  • Develop and present compelling artifacts and presentations that translate complex regulatory and policy requirements into clear, user-centered design solutions for federal stakeholders
  • Participate in iterative design activities including participatory design sessions, design critiques, and analysis and synthesis working sessions
  • Proactively partner with Senior Designers, remaining receptive to mentorship while also coaching junior designers with actionable, growth-oriented feedback
  • Identify design risks and communicate recommendations to mitigate them to program leadership
  • May lead accessibility tasks including Section 508 compliance and emerging accessibility standards

Basic Qualifications
  • 4+ years of relevant UX and product design experience and a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent additional experience in lieu of a degree
  • Must meet federal suitability requirements and pass a background investigation as a condition of employment
  • Proficiency in Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and Design System contribution
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in accessibility tools and techniques including Axe, pa11y, ANDI, JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver
  • Working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 compliance standards, including the ability to develop design test cases and plans aligned to accessibility requirements
  • Experience conducting user research including stakeholder interviews, usability testing, task analysis, and conceptual modeling
  • Experience producing user requirements specifications, personas, storyboards, scenarios, flowcharts, design prototypes, and design specifications
  • Ability to communicate research findings and design rationale clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience working within agile or SAFe delivery environments, integrating design work into sprint-based development timelines
  • Familiarity with Miro, Adobe Creative Suite, or other collaborative design and research tooling

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with federal agency digital services or government contracting environments
  • Familiarity with LCR 5-220 or comparable federal accessibility standards
  • Experience contributing to or governing Design System component libraries across a multi-team program
  • Exposure to SAFe PI planning and coordinating design activities across multiple workstreams
  • Familiarity with usability testing with assistive technology users including screen reader, keyboard-only, and voice control participants
  • Experience authoring accessibility conformance reports or VPATs prior to major releases

Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility. The range of starting pay for this role is $100,000 - $109,000.
