Overview

Ethoca, a Mastercard company, is transforming the way merchants and card issuers work together to combat fraud and improve the digital commerce experience. We build highly scalable, secure, and resilient technology that powers collaboration across the global payments ecosystem.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who thrives on solving complex technical problems, takes ownership of outcomes, and enjoys building production-grade software that operates at scale. This role is ideal for an engineer who can independently drive initiatives, influence technical decisions, mentor others, and contribute to a culture of engineering excellence.

About the Role :
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, develop, and operate secure, scalable software solutions that support critical business capabilities and customer outcomes.

You will:
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain high-quality software solutions that meet Mastercard standards for security, reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.
• Independently drive technical initiatives from concept through production, navigating ambiguity, managing dependencies, and delivering measurable business outcomes.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, operations, security, and compliance partners to translate business needs into well-designed technical solutions.
• Contribute to architecture and design decisions for distributed systems, APIs, integrations, and platform capabilities, balancing business priorities with long-term maintainability.
• Own software services throughout their lifecycle, including implementation, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement.
• Troubleshoot complex application and production issues using logs, metrics, traces, debugging tools, and systematic root cause analysis techniques.
• Participate in on-call support, incident reviews, and operational readiness activities while driving improvements that enhance reliability and reduce operational toil.
• Apply secure-by-design and privacy-conscious engineering practices when working with sensitive financial and consumer data.
• Foster engineering excellence through code reviews, technical mentoring, knowledge sharing, and promotion of development best practices.
• Continuously improve automation, testing, observability, developer experience, and software delivery processes.
• Use approved AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly to improve productivity while applying sound engineering judgment, rigorous validation, and strong protection of confidential or sensitive information.

All About You :
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong foundation in software engineering principles including system design, source control, testing, debugging, performance analysis, maintainability, and secure software development.
• Expert-level proficiency with Java (17+) and Spring-based application development.
• Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and service integrations.
• Experience developing cloud-native applications and distributed systems, preferably in Azure environments.
• Proficient with distributed source control systems (e.g., Git), including branching strategies, code review workflows, conflict resolution, and release management practices.
• Experience working within modern CI/CD environments, including build automation, deployment pipelines, release validation, and operational support.
• Demonstrated ability to investigate and resolve complex production issues through structured troubleshooting, evidence-based decision-making, and root cause analysis.
• Strong understanding of observability practices including logging, monitoring, metrics, dashboards, distributed tracing, and reliability-oriented alerting.
• Experience with modern data platforms and databases, including data modeling, scalability, performance, and operational trade-offs.
• Working knowledge of authentication, authorization, secrets management, vulnerability management, and secure handling of sensitive data in regulated environments.
• Strong ownership mindset with a proven ability to take initiative, drive work to completion, remove blockers, and deliver results with limited supervision.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across teams, influence technical decisions, and communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable using approved AI-assisted development tools and applying critical judgment to validate AI-generated outputs before production use.
• Committed to continuous learning, engineering excellence, and helping others grow.

Preferred Qualifications :
• Experience in payments, fintech, commerce, banking, fraud prevention, or other regulated industries.
• Experience building high-throughput, highly available, or event-driven systems.
• Experience with batch processing, workflow orchestration, or large-scale data pipelines.
• Experience incorporating AI-enabled capabilities into products or engineering workflows.
