Responsibilities

  • Own financial lifecycle of projects from setup to closeout
  • Establish budgets, billing structures, and financial information for projects
  • Review time and expenses for accuracy and allocation
  • Prepare monthly project billing, aligning invoices with contracts
  • Analyze project profitability and associated financial metrics
  • Monitor budget performance and identify potential issues
  • Collaborate directly with Project Managers to provide financial insights and recommendations
  • Prepare project forecasts and assist with budget development
  • Reconcile project financials and resolve discrepancies

Full Job Description
Our client is looking for a Senior Project Accountant to join their growing Accounting team in New York City. This person will take ownership of the financial management of a portfolio of projects, partnering closely with Project Managers and leadership to ensure projects are accurately billed, financially healthy, and properly reported.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced project accountant who enjoys working closely with operational teams and wants to play a key role in project profitability, forecasting, and financial decision-making.

Responsibilities
  • Own the financial lifecycle of assigned projects from initial setup through final closeout.
  • Set up projects, budgets, billing structures, cost centers, and related financial information.
  • Review time, expenses, and project costs for accuracy and proper allocation.
  • Prepare monthly project billing and ensure invoices align with contracts, rates, and deliverables.
  • Analyze WIP, unbilled revenue, revenue recognition, and project profitability.
  • Monitor project performance against budget and identify variances, risks, and potential issues.
  • Partner directly with Project Managers to explain financial results and provide recommendations.
  • Prepare project forecasts and assist with developing budgets for new and existing projects.
  • Reconcile project financials and investigate discrepancies between project systems and the general ledger.
  • Review subcontractor invoices and ensure costs are properly captured and supported.
  • Assist with collections by researching outstanding invoices and resolving billing questions.
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Prepare financial schedules and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Maintain accurate project records and ensure compliance with company policies and contractual requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and project financial controls.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of project accounting experience, ideally within engineering, architecture, construction, or professional services.
  • Strong understanding of project accounting, WIP, revenue recognition, billing, and job costing.
  • Experience working directly with Project Managers or other operational leaders.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to non-finance professionals.
  • Experience with ERP/project accounting systems; Deltek, Vantagepoint, Vision, or Unanet experience is a plus.
  • Experience with ACEC-style engineering consulting projects is strongly preferred.

Compensation: $110,000-115,000
Salary is based on a range of factors that include relevant experience, knowledge, skills, other job-related qualifications.
