Full Job Description

The Senior Manager, Infrastructure Engineeringleads a team of engineers responsible for the platforms and systems that power our global engineering organization. This role balances hands-on technical leadership with people management, driving the continued evolution toward cloud-native, containerized, and highly available infrastructure while building a high-performing, engaged team. The Senior Manager partners closely with engineering leadership, product, and cross-functional stakeholders to reduce developer friction, strengthen system reliability and security, and ensure infrastructure investments scale with business growth.

BigCommerce, part of the Commerce brand family, helps merchants increase sales at every stage of their growth. From small startups to mid-market businesses and large enterprises, we provide the leading e-commerce platform. Our customers can then concentrate on what's most important: growing their businesses. We enable our customers to build, innovate, and grow, collectively reshaping the e-commerce industry.

What You’ll Do:

All aspects of managing distributed infrastructure and software engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.

  • Own execution of the platform and infrastructure roadmap for the team, translating broader infrastructure strategy into concrete quarterly priorities

  • Lead the team's continued shift toward cloud-native, containerized, and orchestrated environments (e.g., Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code)

  • Ensure core infrastructure, data, and messaging layers are built and operated to support global scale, performance, and availability targets

  • Drive developer productivity initiatives that reduce friction and cycle time across build, test, deploy, and observability workflows

  • Partner with security and platform architecture peers to ensure infrastructure decisions support reliability, availability, and security without sacrificing developer velocity

  • Manage a team of infrastructure/platform engineers, holding clear ownership of strategic areas of the codebase and technical roadmap

  • Communicate across teams and geographies to ensure cohesion within engineering and alignment with cross-functional stakeholders

  • Coach, mentor, and grow engineers and technical leads, building a sustainable talent pipeline within the team

  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to attract, hire, and retain top-tier infrastructure engineering talent

  • Foster a high-trust, high-feedback culture where engineers are encouraged to speak up, experiment, and challenge the status quo

  • Manage performance, deliver regular and constructive feedback, and set clear goals aligned to business and team objectives

  • Identify and address talent and skill gaps through hiring, development, and organizational adjustments

  • Represent engineering needs, constraints, and contributions to product, sales, and other cross-functional partners

  • May periodically contribute to technical design, architecture review, or hands-on implementation as needed

Who You Are:

  • 8+ years of professional infrastructure engineering experience and 5+ years professional software engineering experience including 4+ years directly managing engineers

  • Proven expertise in cloud-native and platform architecture, including containerization, orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code

  • Hands-on experience optimizing global performance and security using modern edge and network platforms (e.g., Cloudflare)

  • Strong systems engineering foundation; able to evaluate system design trade-offs and identify architectural or application weaknesses

  • Solid UNIX/Linux fundamentals

  • Experience with backend and/or frontend development in Ruby on Rails, PHP, Python, Golang, Scala, Java, or similar languages

  • Working knowledge of relational database systems and external service integrations

  • Experience operating within Agile methodologies (Scrum, XP, or Kanban)

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and align cross-functional and distributed stakeholders across multiple geographies

  • Excellent written and verbal communicator, comfortable giving direct, constructive feedback at any level of the business

  • Strong bias for action with a track record of driving complex, ambiguous initiatives from concept through production

  • Strong emotional intelligence; composed and effective in high-stakes or ambiguous situations

  • Skilled coach and mentor with a demonstrated commitment to employee development

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

  • Prior experience in infrastructure, platform, or SaaS engineering environments strongly preferred

  • Track record of on-time, on-budget delivery with satisfied technical and business stakeholders

Work Where You Thrive:

For candidates based in the Austin or Atlanta metro area, the position follows a hybrid work model with three days per week in the office, balancing focused individual work with meaningful in-person collaboration.
