Full Job Description

The Role

Oversee all aspects of The Sony Open – a PGA TOUR Event.Includes leading a team of 12+ permanent/contracted staff and 700+ volunteers. Set and drive strategy to deliver upon title and key stakeholder KPI’s; deliver best in class fan and player experiences; drive revenue, community engagement, special programming and CSR initiatives. Represent The Sony Championship, PGA TOUR, Benefiting Charity and IMG Golf in collaboration with community partners to enhance the Championship’s market position.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Lead the IMG team in developing a comprehensive business plan for the Tournament. Lead engagement with Title Sponsor, Host Site and market stakeholders for strategy and alignment.

  • Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with the Title Sponsor, PGA TOUR, host venue, local and national sponsor representatives, benefitting charities, local and national media, corporate community and local/state government entities.

  • Interface with community leaders to foster the overall impression and perception for the Tournament and IMG.

  • Lead annual and long range strategic planning exercises. Collaborate with the Tournamentteam and leadership to establish KPI’s and track results.

  • In cooperation with IMG commercial staff, develop and execute an annual revenue plan for growth of the Tournament; including corporate partnership revenue, title sponsor supplier programming, consumer revenues and special events/charitable programming.

  • Act as the principal spokesperson for the Tournament.

  • Lead the local event staff and central consumer marketing/communications in the development of an annual marketing and communications plan to include advertising, promotions, public relations and community engagement to enhance tournament awareness and perception.

  • Lead the tournament team and central operations function in the development and execution of an annual operational plan with the goal of advancing best in class operational delivery from visual presentation to on-site fan experience to impact initiatives (sustainability, HS, etc)

  • Drive the strategy, development and implementation of a corporate sales plan designed to drive revenue growth, strategic reinvestment into the business and overall profitability of the Tournaments business.

  • Oversee the day-to-day business operations of the Honolulu office and IMG team.

  • Inspire staff and develop talent. Encourage staff to pursue new tasks and challenges related to Tournament objectives; enrich professional and personal experiences.

  • Oversee the development and ongoing management of annual and 3 year budget plans.

  • Build internal relationships and leverage resources across internal business units for the benefit of The Sony Championship.

  • Drive IMG corporate initiatives and IMG Golf Event business development interests in the region.

  • Collaborate throughout varied IMG (and Endeavor) business units to effectively urge growth and support across The Sony Championship.

Unusual Challenges or Circumstances e.g. shift(s)/ unsocial hours/ travel etc.

  • Regular weekend and evening work

  • Approximately 8-12 weeks of travel annually

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and Experience

  • Established experience in managing of large scale, high profile sports events, with a background and interest in golf

  • Use of broad industry experience to lead Event(s) forward operationally and commercially in line with strategic aims.

  • Established contacts within golf with strong relationships with Federations, venues and government organizations

  • Experience in public speaking and delivering c-suite presentations

  • Extensive experience in both project and budget management.

  • Experience in managing a large events team, including onsite contractors

  • Extensive knowledge of the golf industry and a keen interest in golf trends

  • 10+ years relevant experience

Skills & Abilities (Personal and Professional)

  • Superb organization, planning and monitoring skills to deliver a successful event.

  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build and manage relationships with appropriate internal and external parties, conflict resolution skills necessary

  • Communicate with external stakeholders including sponsors, federations, government organizations, host venues, players (and their teams), contractors and internal Operations teams. Able to communicate to people at different levels effectively and diplomatically.

  • Excellent time management skills, ability to work calmly under pressure whilst meeting deadlines.

  • Very strong interpersonal skills to work with and manage a variety of different personality types in sometimes stressful and/or uncomfortable situations. Ability to work with people of different cultures.

  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
