An overview of this roleAs a Senior Backend Engineer on the Flow Components functional team, you'll help build GitLab's Flow Registry, which provides reusable primitives for agentic flows built on the GitLab Duo Agent Platform. Your primary focus will be backend engineering in Python, using LangChain and LangGraph to develop secure, reliable, and scalable capabilities across the Duo Workflow Service and the GitLab monolith. You'll also work across the stack when needed, bringing familiarity with JavaScript and frontend development to support the official GitLab Duo Agent Platform client, Duo CLI, and advocate for a strong user experience.
What you'll do- Develop, ship, and maintain secure, well-tested, and performant Flow Registry features across the Duo Workflow Service and the GitLab monolith backend.
- Collaborate with Product Management, User Experience, frontend, backend, and artificial intelligence specialists to refine requirements and deliver iterative product improvements.
- Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST application programming interfaces, related backend logic, and clear contracts with frontend clients.
- Improve automated testing with RSpec and other frameworks to strengthen quality, reliability, and developer feedback loops.
- Share standards, patterns, and lessons with other engineers to support responsible artificial intelligence integration and evidence-driven engineering.
- Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency.
- Monitor the competitive landscape and help keep GitLab's Flow Registry primitives and capabilities competitive within the agentic platform market.
What you'll bring- Experience building and maintaining production Python applications with LangChain and LangGraph, including background jobs, application programming interfaces, and data models.
- Experience designing and shipping artificial intelligence-powered backend features and integrations, with sound judgment about large language model limitations and responsible production use.
- Proficiency in designing or extending REST and GraphQL application programming interfaces with attention to scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility.
- Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including efficient queries and data modeling.
- Comfort working across the stack in a mature codebase and addressing performance bottlenecks at the application and, when relevant, infrastructure layers.
- Familiarity with JavaScript and Vue frontend development, with an understanding of user experience principles.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including experience writing technical proposals and documentation and collaborating in a remote, asynchronous, cross-functional environment.
- Openness to learning and applying transferable skills from related technologies or domains.
