Position Summary

As a member of an interprofessional team, the Registered Nurse (RN) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides patient-centered nursing care in a high-acuity, critical care environment. Practicing in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario standards, Hospital policies, and Patient Care Services guidelines, the RN delivers safe, compassionate, and evidence-informed care to critically ill patients. The RN demonstrates clinical leadership, advanced critical thinking, and accountability while supporting continuous assessment, complex treatment interventions, patient safety, and coordinated transitions of care within the ICU and across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meets the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and practices in accordance with Hospital and Patient Care Services policies and procedures.
  • Organizes, implements, and evaluates comprehensive plans of nursing care to meet the complex needs of critically ill patients.
  • Applies evidence-based practice and advanced clinical judgment to coordinate patient care activities and identify appropriate resources and supports.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to assess changes in patient status (complexity, stability) and initiates consultation, escalation, or transfer of care as required.
  • Provides direct nursing care to critically ill patients, including continuous monitoring, advanced interventions, and management of complex therapies within the scope of practice.
  • Monitors patient care, workflow processes, and outcomes and participates in quality improvement initiatives to optimize care delivery.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient safety and contributes to a culture of safety.
  • Utilizes human and material resources effectively and responsibly.
  • Functions in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
  • Provides leadership and support to team members and performs the Charge Nurse role when assigned.
  • Participates in the orientation, mentorship and support of new team members and nursing students, including preceptorship activities as assigned.
  • Works collaboratively with external education partners to facilitate student learning experiences.
  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing learning, participation in education sessions and in-services, and self-assessment of professional development needs.
  • Maintains awareness of current developments in nursing practice and relevant legislation, including the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Participates as a member of the interprofessional team, promoting effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, physicians, healthcare team members, and community resources.
  • Supports patient and family education, health promotion, and referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • Assists in maintaining established standards of care through individual performance, participation in hospital committees, and engagement in performance improvement and patient flow initiatives.
  • May be utilized in other patient care areas during a shift based on patient care needs and operational requirements.
  • Performs Critical Care Response Team (CCRT) responsibilities when assigned.
  • Responds to Code Blue events across the organization when assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the direct Manager or designate

Qualifications

Education
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Completion of an approved nursing program BScN or equivalent is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required. CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) will be accepted as an equivalent.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required or willingness to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Critical Care Nursing Certificate or current enrollment into a program and completion within 18 months of hire is required.
  • Completion of Coronary Care I (1) certificate is required or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Completion of QRS OnDemand Rhythm Interpretation course may be considered as an alternative.
  • Completion of Coronary Care II (2) certificate is required or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • IV certification or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire. Experience with IV initiation may be considered.

Experience
  • Experience with Critical Care Response Teams (CCRT) and other Rapid Response Teams is considered an asset.
  • Minimum two (2) years of medical/surgical experience is required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of recent experience in Critical Care (ICU, ED, PACU, PICU etc.) is preferred.
  • Recent graduates who have completed an ICU consolidation or Clinical Externs with recent ICU experience may be considered, including for New Graduate Initiative (NGI) opportunities.

Skills and Traits
  • Must be able to meet the physical and emotional responsibilities of the role, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent and repetitive pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as safely operating equipment.
