Principal Quality Assurance / Control Engineer

Duties:
  • Define the scope of technical and quality engineering programs and develop effective solutions to challenges involving unique or complex problems.
  • Meet company and industry requirements and apply site systems to achieve quality, cost-effective, and timely results.
  • Provide quality guidance to less senior professionals on related tasks.
  • Apply technical and quality engineering experience within the field of specialization to resolve complex problems.
  • Incorporate advanced technical and quality engineering practices, complicated technical requirements, special materials or processes, and complex coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
  • Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and serve as a technical and quality engineering subject matter expert.
  • Provide direction across department lines on programs seeking new approaches to problems and new applications of existing engineering and quality assurance principles.
  • Evaluate programs through surveillances, monitoring, assessments, and reviews.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations based on evaluations and identify improvements where established technology, methodology, or procedures are inadequate.
  • Develop Quality Assurance programs and procedures and ensure effective execution of technical and quality assurance requirements within the assigned facility or program area.
  • Ensure compliance with approved schedules and that personnel under technical guidance are appropriately trained and effectively utilized.
  • Prepare plans, schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements for technical and quality engineering tasks.
  • Monitor progress, expenditures, and quality of completed work to ensure technical and quality requirements are met.
  • Serve on a Facility Review Board, providing QA expertise in support of facility startup and/or operations.
  • Support facility and project needs by conducting procurement, procedure, and work package reviews.
  • Communicate objectives and results to customers, colleagues, management, and DOE-SR personnel.
  • Communicate with DOE-SR personnel regarding QA Program and corrective action status.
  • Serve as a QA expert in evaluating the QA Programs of major program participants, including subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Recommend corrective actions, redirect efforts as appropriate, and present findings to program or facility management and Site QA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


Education/Yrs. of Experience:
  • Candidate must meet at least one of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with 8-10 years of Quality Assurance, Quality Control, or Engineering experience in Operations, Maintenance, Construction, or Industrial Manufacturing; OR
  • Associate degree with 10-12 years of practical Quality Assurance, Quality Control, or Engineering experience in Operations, Maintenance, Construction, or Industrial Manufacturing; OR
  • High School Diploma with at least 16 years of multi-disciplined professional Quality Assurance or engineering-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility in an operations, maintenance, construction, or manufacturing environment.


Required Skills/Experience:
  • Practical experience in quality control, work control, materials management, civil/structural, mechanical, maintenance, construction, or related areas.
  • Previous Mechanical and Welding inspection or surveillance experience.
  • Experience supporting Quality Assurance and/or Quality Control activities within operations, maintenance, construction, industrial manufacturing, or a related environment.
  • Ability to perform surveillance, monitoring, assessments, and reviews of quality programs and activities.
  • Ability to support procurement, procedure, and work package reviews.
  • Well-developed organizational and supervisory skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform weekly field walkdowns of the job site for engineering work being performed.
  • Ability to work in active construction environments, including walking distances greater than one-half mile and climbing ladders to access remote areas.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current or prior certification as a Lead Auditor.
  • ASQ/ASQC Certified Quality Engineer.
  • Possession of an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years.


Other Job Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties.
  • Periodic business travel to supplier facilities will be required to conduct surveillance activities of work being performed in support of SPD (KPuMP).
  • Individual supplier surveillance trips are anticipated to range from one to two weeks in duration, depending upon project requirements and the scope of supplier activities.
  • A 40-hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules, including 5/8s, 4/10s, and 9/80s.
  • Overtime may be required at times to meet project deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager.
