The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Principal Engineer, Project Estimating to join our Governance and Project Controls team in Toronto, Canada or Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

This is a permanent onsite position.

As a Principal Engineer, Estimating you will technically coordinate the global project estimating function across Vale Base Metals, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and strategic alignment of all Capex estimates. Your experience and skill will allow you to define and implement global standards, tools, and methodologies, while mentoring regional teams and interfacing with senior leadership to support investment decisions.

The main accountabilities include:
  • Define and implement global estimating standards, tools, and procedures across all project phases (PEA to Execution).
  • Lead the development of Capex estimates for major projects in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia.
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship to regional estimating teams and external partners
  • Identify and capture optimization opportunities to meet Capex reduction targets and hurdle rates.
  • Implement and manage a centralized estimating database and digital tools to enhance accuracy and transparency


About You

Education:
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Specialization and/or certifications in Project Management: PMI (PMP, PFMP, PMOCP or RMP) or AACE (CCP, CEP, EVP, PSP or PRMP) is desirable

Experience:
  • 15+ years of experience in capital project estimating, with at least 5 years in a global or leadership role.
  • Proven track record in leading estimating for large-scale mining or industrial projects.

Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of AACE estimating principles and tools (e.g., InEight, Cleopatra, Aspen, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of engineering design, procurement, and construction workflows
  • Experience with benchmarking, cost databases, and risk-adjusted estimating.
  • Strong quantitative analysis and cost modeling capabilities
  • Fluency in English.
  • Fluency in Portuguese is a desirable
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
