The Opportunity We are currently seeking a
Lead Ground Control Engineer, to join our
Mines Technical Services team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position onsite working Monday to Friday.
As a Lead Ground Control Engineer, you will support the execution of the Ground Control Program and Seismic Risk Management Plans at Vale's Mine. This role oversees all aspects of ground control duties at our underground operations. The role holder works with an effective ground control team, including Ground Control Engineers, Mine Technician/Technologists and/or Engineers in Training, to provide Ground Control Services to the mine operations.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Recommend actions to ensure that the safety and stability of mine excavations are maintained with respect to geotechnical standards, Vale's policies, and legislated requirements.
- Update the Mine Design Package on an annual basis with inputs from various departments at a mine site.
- Provide day-to-day technical support and coordination for managing the site-specific Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Programs and work closely with the technical execution teams at the mine sites.
- Assist at the mine operation to conduct geo-mechanical risk assessment of the annual mine execution plans to ensure that mining sequence and mine layouts are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production.
- Accountable for stewardship of ore reserve and life of mine plan, develop and recommend mining plans, ground support systems and development plans.
- Knowledge of Rock Mechanics modeling software (MAP3D, Rocscience programs).
- Contribute to the implementation of new systems/processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide performance feedback to team members, mentor and lead team to ensure safe production behaviors are exhibited and take corrective action when necessary to address noncompliance.
- Provide technical assistance with ground stability issues as required.
About You Education:- Undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering.
- Related undergraduate degrees in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering will be considered.
- A Master's degree in a related field is considered an asset.
- Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) required.
Experience:- A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
- Professional Engineer designation in Ontario or eligible to obtain it.

- An understanding of seismic management tools and seismic monitoring techniques.
- Familiarity with geotechnical assessment methods relating to the assessment of rock mass quality, and the design of underground excavations.
- Knowledge of engineering planning software (Deswik).
- Underground mine design, mining technology, and high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
- Knowledge of mining standards and guidance documents.
