Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineering Designer is responsible for creating blueprints, schematics, BOMs, and varied complexity mechanical designs using computer-aided design software and is also responsible for the assembly and integration of a system, its major components, and the designs of all the physical pieces that contribute to the overall completion of sterilization machines. Responsibilities include communicating with internal and external stakeholders, designing, assembling, and testing sub-components of varying sizes, and may include traveling to assist on system installations. The Mechanical Engineering Designer participates in the entire process from design to installation to develop the skills required to ensure the engineering of the entire system is optimal. Further, development of the skills required for troubleshooting to identify problems and analyze deficiencies to develop solutions is essential in contributing to improvements across a system. Meeting and contributing to design specifications and requirements, implementing new and updating current system designs, testing, and evaluating sub-components of a system prior to final assembly, working and contributing to a teamwork environment, and upholding all safety protocols are key aspects of this position.

This opening is within the Technology Development group of STERIS AST Equipment and Technologies Division and is focused on the Mevex equipment product line. Our Mevex equipment offering supports Customers with integrated electron-beam sterilization equipment, including accelerator systems for electron beam and X-ray irradiation, product handling systems, process management, automation, and radiation protection system design solutions. The Technology Development group designs improvements, new features, and new products within the Mevex equipment offering. This role involves collaborating in a team environment with other technical disciplines to develop new technologies related to particle accelerator-based sterilization and processing systems. Activities in this group include requirements-gathering, specification development, conceptual design, prototyping, testing and qualification in an R&D bunker, and finally release to production. The role will involve learning and developing a broad set of skills within and outside of the traditional Mechanical Engineering discipline to solve complex problems that can involve ionizing radiation, radiofrequency energy, magnetics, thermal, high vacuum, material chemistry and other technical challenges.

What You'll do as a Mechanical Engineering Designer II

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the engineering team to share and receive information and make helpful contributions to projects that enable the successful completion of system builds. Contributes to updates and improvements to allow the systems to meet all requirements. Participates in and initiates the design review process.
  • Contributes to and leads small team efforts by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; supports the directives and decisions of more senior technical staff and management, reviews work of less senior technical staff, and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Creates schematics, blueprints, and assembly instructions independently. Contributes to new designs/models and integrates new and existing technology to contribute to the evolution of sterilization machines.
  • Writes and uses detailed design specifications and product/system-level requirements to design/model, implement, test, and evaluate custom mechanical components and sub-assemblies for radiation sterilization machines and systems. Ensures designs conform to standards, specifications, requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Helps to identify technical problems, troubleshoots, tests, and evaluates existing and new mechanical designs and provides creative solutions.
  • Generates detailed, high quality technical documentation to capture and communicate designs. Documents work by preparing engineering reports, studies, calculates, and checks technical drawings for completeness and accuracy.
  • Collaborates with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and works with suppliers and manufacturers to obtain and design parts to contribute to project completion. Sources components as needed for assemblies and manages delivery timelines to meet project schedules.
  • Conducts quality control checks and qualification to ensure that all components are acceptable and function properly before releasing to production or installing at a customer site.
  • Attends meetings and communicates with Customers using excellent Customer service to maintain relationships and represent STERIS positively. Travels to Customer sites independently or with more senior technical staff to gather the requirements needed to fulfill Customer needs and expectations.
  • May lead small sub-project teams and mentor new hires in process, technical, and problem-solving best practices. May travel to Customer sites to participate in machine installation. All other duties as assigned.


The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2 years or relevant professional experience in an ME role
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, principles and systems, and other engineering disciplines (e.g., electrical, civil, physics) and application to the design and development of systems.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Experience with documenting work via technical drawings, technical reports, diagnostic reports and validation reports
  • Experience designing and evaluating mechanical systems for moderately complex subassemblies.
  • Experience designing systems to standards, specifications, requirements and safety protocols.
  • Ability to obtain a passport and travel internationally
