Full Job Description
Position Summary

Join the Procedural Solutions team at STERIS developing Operating Room Integration (ORI) software as a Senior Manager, Software Engineering. In this role you will be responsible for leading and driving the software development team working towards delivering reliable software solutions, and delivering projects on time and budget. You will drive processes, technology roadmaps, work plans and provide technical direction for the design and development of the ORI suite of products. You will proactively develop and apply new approaches to technical design, development and operations and ensure software compliance with design standards and product functional specifications.

* This position is located onsite in Mentor, Ohio with the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule.

What You'll Do as a Sr. Manager, Software Engineering

Provide clear technical direction and decision-making guidance to engineering teams, helping break down ambiguous problems into actionable plans, estimates, and deliverables.
Provide development estimates for new software and software related products.
Proactively identify, frame, and drive resolution of complex software, infrastructure, and product reliability challenges, while leading the design, development, and implementation activities required to support new products and improve existing products
Direct engineers in the preparation of development and qualification tests, analyze results, draws conclusions, and presents summary and recommendations
Lead the technical architecture, modernization, and implementation strategy for software platforms, DevOps, automation, infrastructure, and engineering systems to improve scalability, reliability, security, and delivery efficiency
Champion modern engineering practices, including Agile/Scrum execution, Git-based development workflows, CI/CD, automated testing, secure coding, observability, and AI-enabled engineering tools where appropriate. Drives adoption of AI-enabled engineering capabilities to improve developer productivity, code quality, and speed-to-market
Create and communicate a forward-looking vision for software improvement, while leading Agile practices, engineering discipline, automation, cybersecurity, and long-term product robustness across engineering, product, and business teams
Provide hands-on coaching, challenges engineers, and guides engineering leaders, managers, and teams to improve technical judgment, ownership, execution discipline, collaboration, accountability, and delivery predictability Manage the hiring, staffing, and development of a diverse, high-performing software engineering organization
Drive a culture of continuous improvement by questioning assumptions, raising technical standards, removing blockers, and encouraging teams to pursue practical, sustainable solutions.
Drive multi-generational technology roadmap for the software function, in collaboration with business/product roadmaps and peer functions
Participate in the evaluation of technology opportunities which can result in new business models, products or scientific advantages to STERIS
Support established relationships with key third party engineering service firms, and professional organizations to promote inorganic development
Prepare and conduct reviews for R&D management and supports formal program reviews for business management. Responsible for software development in compliance to the FDA software validation guidelines, as well as the IEC 62304 standards for software development

The Experience, Skills and Abilities Needed

Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or related technical degree from a four-year college or university is required
  • Minimum of ten years of product software development experience
  • Experience developing software with one or more of the following on Linux based server applications: C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, other modern object-oriented programming languages
  • 5+ years experience leading a software team
  • Experience driving modern engineering practices such as CI/CD automation, automated build and test pipelines, static analysis, secure coding practices, traceability, configuration management, and release discipline
  • Experience with modern software development processes, including SDLC governance, requirements management, design reviews, implementation, verification, validation, release readiness, and post-release support.
  • Experience managing software projects through full life cycle
  • Experience with modern programming languages, software architecture patterns, debugging techniques, code review practices, and secure software development principles, with the ability to provide technical guidance to engineering teams
  • 5 + years experience with Git-based source control workflows, including GitFlow or similar branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, merge controls, release branches, and hotfix management.
  • Demonstrated experience with Agile/Scrum practices, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily execution, reviews, retrospectives, dependency management, and continuous improvement.


Preferred:
  • Advanced degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering or Professional Engineering license is a plusExperience within the medical device industry
  • Experience with software development lifecycle and IEC 62304 standards
  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering productivity practices

Pay range for this opportunity is $140,000 - $160,000. This position is also eligible for bonus participation.

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
