ASRC Federal Facilities Logistics (AFFL) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our work at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt MD. This role is in support of the Repair, Operations, Maintenance and Engineering (ROME) contract. This is an onsite position in NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. About the role We are seeking a highly technical, field-oriented mechanical systems specialist to support facility maintenance, troubleshooting, and project planning at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The specialist will work with project managers, facility managers, technicians, engineers, and contractors to assess mechanical systems and provide practical technical advice for planning and completing work. This is an applied technical role focused on field knowledge, problem-solving, and project support. A mechanical engineering degree and professional engineering license are not required. Relevant hands-on experience may substitute for formal education. Responsibilities • Inspect mechanical equipment and systems in the field; identify deficiencies, failure risks, and maintenance needs. • Troubleshoot mechanical problems and advise on practical repair or replacement options. • Support work involving HVAC, chillers, pumps, piping, valves, refrigeration, processing water, vacuum equipment, and other facility or test-support systems. • Advise project and maintenance teams on the labor, materials, and equipment needed to perform mechanical work. • Develop and review estimates for technician labor hours, equipment costs, parts, and materials. • Help project managers assess whether proposed hours, costs, and work plans are reasonable based on field conditions and technical requirements. • Review drawings, equipment information, contractor proposals, and work plans for technical completeness. • Gather field measurements and document existing conditions to support project planning and cost estimates. • Coordinate with technicians and contractors during repairs and projects; inspect completed work and document deficiencies. • Support equipment testing, startup, commissioning, and return to service. • Use IBM Maximo to review work orders, asset information, work history, and maintenance records. • Maintain accurate records of inspections, equipment condition, labor and material needs, and follow-up actions. What we're looking for • Substantial hands-on experience with mechanical equipment, building systems, industrial systems, or facility maintenance. • Working familiarity with IBM Maximo or a similar computerized maintenance management system. • Ability to read mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, specifications, and maintenance records. • Experience diagnosing equipment problems and estimating the labor, materials, and equipment needed to address them. • Ability to clearly explain technical findings and cost or labor recommendations to project managers and maintenance teams. • Comfort working directly with technicians, project staff, vendors, and contractors. • Strong attention to safety, work quality, and follow-through. • Ability to work on-site at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Education and experience Requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2-4 years of experience in a related or applicable field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates may qualify through a combination of technical training, trade education, military experience, and directly relevant work experience. Preferred: Experience supporting complex facilities, laboratories, test facilities, industrial equipment, or government sites. Role boundary This position provides technical assessment, labor and cost input, and project support. It does not serve as the engineering design authority. Engineering calculations, final design decisions, and work requiring a licensed professional engineer must be performed or approved by appropriately qualified engineering personnel.
