Full Job Description

This role is for a person who thrives at building and operating a high performing software engineering team and is passionate about empowering engineers to achieve the best work of their careers. Well respected by technical and non-technical individuals, this person is an influential leader, coach, manager, and engineer. This leader will need to balance: driving our aggressive product roadmap, improving the performance and stability of our system, introducing engineering best practices into the organization, and leading/mentoring other engineers.

What You'll Do:

Work closely with our engineering leaders to:

  • Build an open, positive and energized culture

  • Build, lead and hire a high-caliber team of software engineers

  • Drive our technical roadmap and direction of our stack

  • Lead and inspire your team and other engineers to build the best ecommerce products on the planet

  • Encourage innovation and foster an environment of continuous improvement

  • Ensure that technical decisions support our goals of quality, performance, scalability, reliability, availability and security

Management responsibilities:

  • Be both a highly technical hands-on coder and an effective people manager

  • Hold your own in technical discussion, be a subject matter expert and have strategic influence

  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers and stakeholders in all corporate offices to promote communication and coordination

  • Establish team objectives in alignment with business goals

  • Organize and facilitate regular 1:1’s with your team for coaching and mentoring

  • Execution of performance improvement plans for under-performers

  • Continued enforcement of best practices to improve engineering quality and efficiency

  • Establish a sense of urgency and direction; set expectations

  • Create and participate in an on-call rotation for incident management

Who You Are:

  • 5+ years experience in building systems in PHP, Go, Python, Typescript, Angular, Ruby, etc.

  • Think iteratively by breaking down problems into smaller, deliverable / deployable pieces.

  • Quality is the top priority.

  • Knowledge of gRPC, RabbitMQ, and familiarity with caching solutions

  • 2+ years managing engineering teams, including demonstrated track record of growing senior talent and building team structure from the ground up

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform or Cloud Computing desirable

  • Experience with relational database systems and external services integrations

  • Experience with backend and frontend (UI) development

  • Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and leading sprint ceremonies.

  • Experience with SaaS platforms or Cloud Computing highly desirable

  • Solid UNIX / LAMP knowledge (ideally 2+ years working experience with PHP, MySQL, and Linux)

  • Prior experience at a commerce software company is a plus

  • Have an excellent ability to communicate and to coordinate

  • Will speak up when something just doesn’t feel right with productive feedback

  • Have excellent problem solving, critical thinking and debugging skills

  • Has strong bias to action and the drive to make a difference

  • BS degree required or higher degree in Computer Science or related technical field

    Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant experience, skills, qualifications and geographic location. We also consider internal equity to help ensure fair and consistent pay practices across our teams.
