Manager, Software Development- Hybrid, Cary, North Carolina

 

About the job

The Compute engineering team is looking for a Manager, Software Development to lead the design, development, quality, operation and evolution of the SAS Compute platform. The team owns critical workload-execution capabilities, including Compute Server, Compute Core, Compute Service, Supervisor and associated cloud-native infrastructure that power SAS Viya deployments. 

 

You will provide people and technical leadership, helping the team deliver reliable, scalable, secure and customer-focused solutions while fostering a high-performing engineering culture. In your first 12 months, you will build strong relationships across Platform Services, establish credibility with the Compute engineering team, lead key roadmap initiatives, improve service reliability and operational efficiency, develop and retain engineering talent, and drive measurable improvements in engineering effectiveness and execution. 

 

As a Manager, Software Development - you will: 

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of software engineers, setting clear goals and priorities; support career growth through mentoring, feedback and development planning; conduct performance and talent management; and recruit, hire and onboard engineering talent.
  • Manage roadmap commitments and customer-driven priorities, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, reliability improvements and operational excellence while driving predictable planning, estimation and delivery. 
  • Strengthen engineering quality through code reviews, effective testing strategies and continuous improvement, and be encouraged to participate in open-source projects on behalf of SAS. 
  • Provide technical direction for Compute platform services and guide decisions on scalability, resiliency, security and maintainability in partnership with architects and senior engineers. 
  • Improve service reliability, observability and supportability; support critical customer escalations and production issues; and promote automation across development, testing, deployment and operations. 
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Architecture, SRE, Security, Quality Engineering and Customer Support, building strong relationships across CAS, Platform Services and other engineering organizations. 
  • Champion security and compliance best practices, ensuring applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals; embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline
  • Requires a minimum of eight years of related programming or testing experience, including one year of project lead, supervisory or management experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience leading software engineering teams, including performance management, coaching, career development, recruitment and team building. 
  • Experience delivering enterprise-scale software, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architectures. 
  • Experience developing software on Linux, working with cloud-native and containerized environments, and delivering in Agile software development environments. 
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

  • Knowledge of security and authentication, performance and scalability engineering, enterprise platform operations, and analytics, compute or data-processing platforms. 
  • Experience managing geographically distributed teams and a passion for modern cloud-native software development.
