The Opportunity The Manager of Makerspace Education & Design Hub will oversee the operations of the Bikram S. Dhillon and Family Medical Library Maker Space to ensure effective delivery of front-facing services. This includes:
- Develops, coordinates, and provides on-going support for Makerspace programs and services, including providing digital technology-related student training and consultation services.
- Utilizes expertise to support various digital technology projects at the Libraries, and reviews and implements processes and services that align with the Toronto campus.
- Engages with the School of Medicine community to align research requirements, educational and outreach needs, and user support through Makerspace programming and services.
- Works closely with the department head as well as lead hands at the Medical Library, and with the Toronto campus Library Information Technology Services (LITS), Digital Media Experience (DME) Lab, and maker space staff to facilitate ongoing exchange of expertise and best practices.
Location of Work: 4 to 5 days a week onsite, based on operational requirements and subject to change, School of Medicine building in Brampton.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinates and develops the terms of co-operation and joint projects with Makerspace partners and provides consultation and workshops on appropriate uses of technologies for students and faculty (academic or clinical).
- Prepares project proposals and reports by collecting and analyzing data related to makerspace operations and initiatives. That includes providing adhoc reports to the Library leadership, contributing to government reporting requirements, and supporting advancement efforts by providing information on the makerspace's technical capabilities.
- Oversees Makerspace operations by preparing plans for programs, projects, training and staffing, such as facilitating broader medical learner support, ensuring makerspace information is up-to-date and accessible for internal and external audiences and promoting Makerspace services to the TMU community
- Collaborates with librarians to integrate makerspace technologies and services into teaching, learning, research, and outreach activities across medical and general disciplines.
- Continuously monitors developments in recent and emerging technologies. Tracks age and condition of current tools, coordinating required maintenance/replacement.
- Assists in the development of strategic and programmatic direction of the Makerspace by providing recommendations, advice and research information related to Makerspace & Design Hub key user populations, setting policies, procedures and/or practices as they relate to delivering faculty, staff, and student support and experience.
- Manage and supervise staff, assign and prioritize tasks, establish goals, set expectations and evaluate performance, including, hiring, training, development and performance management of employees.

- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Information Studies, Media Production, New Media, Information Technology, Graphic Communication Management, or other related discipline.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience related to technical support and instruction.
- Experience supervising staff in an academic environment, or related context.
- Experience working with digital media authoring hardware and software (Adobe CC preferred), entry-level fabrication equipment (e.g. 3D printers, sewing machines, desktop vinyl cutters, etc.), installation and projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in digital content that includes digital editing, multimedia, computer-aided design and visualization and electronic publishing production, as well as a strong understanding of emerging technologies.
- Effective management and communication skills; excellent understanding of instructional design in the context of an evolving digital creation and distribution architecture
- Strong organizational, administrative, and time-management skills required to oversee physical spaces, manage equipment, maintain attention to detail, and keep pace with evolving library information technology.
- Knowledge of instructional design combined with strong training skills to lead orientations, staff training, and library instructional programs.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills used to explain policies, contribute to marketing and outreach initiatives.
- A demonstrated commitment to client service - specifically staff, faculty, students, and external contacts.
- Excellent customer service and troubleshooting skills, with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Strong interpersonal skills along with sound judgement, tact and diplomacy are necessary to deal effectively with students, staff, faculty, and the public.
- Ability to direct and coordinate daily work assignments of designated staff is required.
- Analytical, problem solving, and numeracy skills.
