Full Job Description
The Engineering Lab Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the Engineering Lab Operations, including day-to-day activities, and ensure that all testing and analysis is performed according to protocol. Of the highest importance is ensuring a safe working environment for all resources. In addition, continuous improvement in quality of data, throughput of data and operational efficiency is a requirement. Management of the lab calibration, purchasing, safety, training and quality teams, providing leadership, guidance and training of each resource. Coordinate development and revision of procedures, processes, and systems to accomplish a standardized operation with focus on continuous improvement.

Position Responsibilities may include:
  • Manage personnel; motivate, mentor, train, drive employee engagement and conduct performance management and collaborate with human resources regarding corrective actions as needed.
  • Sustain and develop a safety-oriented culture focused on zero incidents.
  • Develop and sustain a 6S program in the lab operation.
  • Establish continuous improvement goals and oversee execution of the associated actions.
  • Establish a culture of continuous improvement using DOE (Design of Experiment), 8D (8 Disciplines), 6 Sigma and similar tools to drive positive sustained results.
  • Sustain and develop project schedules for all significant initiatives and create a results-oriented culture to hit scheduled milestones and ensure on-time delivery of all lab initiatives.
  • Ensure operations complies with all governing agencies, mainly UL (Underwriters Laboratories), Intertek, ANSI (American National Standards Institute), ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), DOE (Department of Energy) and ISO (Internation Organization for Standardization), maintaining the highest levels of data integrity.
  • Manage departmental budget, resources, and equipment; adjust resources & priorities accordingly.
  • Sustain and develop lines of communication with Design Engineering personnel with a focus on overall Department improvement.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative working environment with all teams to develop a culture of teamwork.
  • Perform other related duties and/or special projects to support the Company as required.

Nature & Scope:
  • Ensures work is aligned with the Director's expectations, goals, and vision
  • Accountable for implementation of policies, processes, and procedures for short-term results
  • Decisions and problem-solving are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receives guidance from Senior Manager/Director
  • Works on difficult to moderately complex issues and projects
  • Provides guidance and training to subordinates
  • Has authority to hire, recommend pay, establish performance and recommend for termination
  • Level of signing authority established by company policy/guidelines

Knowledge & Skills:
  • Proficient knowledge of engineering lab testing processes, equipment, systems and standards.
  • Strong background in data acquisition, controls and software development for testing.
  • Effective with interpreting, analyzing and validating test data.
  • Effective problem solving through various techniques including use of tools such as 8D, 6 Sigma, etc.
  • Proficient working knowledge with Microsoft Office - Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
  • Effective project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to establish professional and positive relationships.
  • Proven leadership, coaching / mentoring and team-oriented mindset. Ability to lead a team to achieve strategic goals.
  • Effective decision-making and judgement skills.
  • High level of attention to detail and compliance oriented.
  • Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to work well under pressure and with other departments.

Experience:
  • 8-12 plus years of experience in engineering preferably within the HVAC industry
  • 5 plus years in a leadership role
  • 4 plus years of laboratory testing in a HVAC or appliance field.

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably within Science or Engineering disciplines.

People Management: Yes

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:
• Frequent sitting, standing, and walking.
• Daily use of computer.
• Light physical effort required in working with materials and/or equipment.
• Must be able to perform essential responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.
