About the PositionThe Manager, Billing is a key member of the Finance & Accounting team, reporting to the Director, Billing & AR Operations. This role is responsible for leading the firm's billing function, ensuring the timely, accurate and efficient processing of client invoices while delivering exceptional service to lawyers, clients and internal stakeholders. This position is to fill an existing vacancy.
Through effective leadership, operational oversight and continuous improvement, this position supports the firm's revenue cycle and financial objectives. Working closely with lawyers, legal assistants, clients and finance teams, the Manager, Billing fosters a culture of accountability, service excellence and process efficiency.
The successful candidate is a collaborative, solutions-oriented leader who promotes best practices, establishes service standards and ensures compliance with firm policies, client requirements and billing guidelines.
Primary ResponsibilitiesLeadership and Team Management- Lead, coach and develop a team of 7 billing professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and excellence in client service
- Manage team performance through ongoing coaching, mentoring and regular feedback
- Oversee workload allocation, resource planning and cross-training to ensure effective service delivery and business continuity
- Ensure team members understand and effectively support the firm's revenue cycle, billing standards and service expectations
Billing Operations- Oversee daily billing operations to ensure invoices are processed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with firm policies and client requirements
- Monitor team performance against established service level agreements (SLAs), ensuring billing targets and deadlines are consistently achieved
- Ensure compliance with client billing guidelines, eBilling requirements and billing best practices to minimize billing rejections, write-offs, and payment delays
- Act as the primary escalation point for complex billing issues, working collaboratively with lawyers, legal assistants, clients and finance teams to achieve timely resolution
- Serve as the subject matter expert for billing processes, policies, systems and client billing requirements, providing guidance and support to internal stakeholders
- Support month-end, quarter-end and year-end billing activities to facilitate timely revenue recognition
Client Service and Stakeholder Management- Build and maintain strong relationships with lawyers, legal assistants, clients and finance teams to support an exceptional client experience
- Ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery across all practice groups, offices and client portfolios
- Communicate proactively with stakeholders regarding billing requirements, service expectations and issue resolution
Process Improvement and Controls- Support the Director, Billing & AR Operations in implementing departmental initiatives, leading change management efforts and driving continuous improvement across the revenue cycle
- Establish and maintain billing procedures, controls and service standards that support the firm's financial and client service objectives
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying operational inefficiencies and implementing sustainable process enhancements
- Lead or support system, automation and change management initiatives impacting the billing function
- Ensure compliance with firm policies, client requirements and confidentiality standards
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive billing experience in a law firm or professional services environment, including at least 3 years in a people leadership role
- Strong knowledge of legal billing processes, eBilling platforms, client billing guidelines and revenue cycle management
- Experience with Aderant, Elite 3E or equivalent legal finance systems
- Experience with BillBlast, eBillingHub or other electronic billing platforms is considered an asset
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including reporting and data analysis capabilities
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations
- Strong client service orientation and ability to build effective relationships with lawyers, clients and business services professionals
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and commitment to accuracy

Salary rangeThe expected starting salary range for this role is $105,000 - $120,000. The final offer will be determined based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.
