Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM

Legal Counsel Role

As a key member of the legal team, the successful candidate will provide timely legal advice on a broad range of legal issues in support of business operations and will report directly to the General Counsel.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide strategic legal advice to business units on the application of relevant laws, regulations, and company policies
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements
  • Manage product safety and regulatory matters, including regulatory filings
  • Manage legal compliance matters, including developing and deploying compliance programs, policies, training, and guidance documents
  • Monitor and report on internal compliance activities
  • Assist with Canadian privacy law compliance, including providing legal support for privacy impact assessments and responses to information requests
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and advise business units on compliance and emerging risks impacting the business
  • Support the development, management, and revision of internal policies and procedures
  • Assist General Counsel as needed
  • Additional duties as required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • LL.B./J.D. and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience as in-house counsel, in a law firm or a combination of both
  • Strong knowledge and experience with corporate/commercial matters
  • Strong technical skills and sound business judgment
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, time-management, and communication skills
  • An ability to work independently, handling complex matters from beginning to end with minimal supervision
  • An ability to build collaborative relationships and work cross-functionally with legal and business partners
  • An ability to provide concise, practical legal advice, while explaining complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
  • Experience advising on privacy and data governance matters is considered an asset, as is prior experience working with government agencies and/or regulators


Note: This posting is for an existing vacancy. The expected base salary range for this position is $170,000 - $190,000. Actual total compensation may include variable incentive pay. The determination of an applicant's base salary is based on the applicant's skills, competencies, location and unique qualifications.
