Job DescriptionThis is a hybrid role; only local candidates will be considered.The Java Developer will support the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS). This role oversees the coding, testing, and debugging of programs based on system technical and functional requirements, while leading research and analysis for project proposals and system modifications. The position requires strong technical expertise in application development, database management, and system troubleshooting within a large-scale, team-based environment. The Java Developer also plays a leadership role in coordinating programming staff, establishing development standards, and ensuring the continuity and performance of critical systems.
Responsibilities:- Oversee the coding, testing, and debugging of programs based on system technical and functional requirements, and oversee the preparation of test data.
- Oversee the development of, and/or prepare, flowcharts and diagrams.
- Oversee the preparation of, and/or prepare, instructions for use during production runs, and coordinate the development of instructions or manuals for end users.
- Lead and coordinate research and analysis for project proposals, software and systems modifications, and new projects.
- Analyze proposed computer applications in terms of equipment requirements and capabilities, evaluate database schemas, write and run SQL code, and deploy packages and triggers.
- Review and revise programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt new procedures.
- Analyze logs, system messages, thread connectivity, memory utilization, disk input/output, and disk space to troubleshoot application issues.
- Confer with staff members to schedule work and coordinate programming projects.
- Develop standards and procedures for programming staff, related interfaces, and reports.
- Develop and implement specialized programs to supplement and enhance systems software, and recommend, coordinate, and implement changes to improve application and system performance.
RequirementsMinimum Qualifications: candidates must meet all minimum qualifications- 15 years of experience with JAVA.
- 10 years of experience with SQL databases.
- 8 years of experience sustaining and developing large applications in a team environment.
- 5 years of experience with Linux.
Preferred Qualifications:- 8 years of experience with the Atlassian tool suite, especially JIRA.
- 8 years of experience with Agile methodology.
- 2 years of experience with State of Texas applications, including experience within the Texas Department of Public Safety environment.
- 2 years of experience transitioning applications from legacy mainframe environments to a Java/SQL environment.
Additional Requirements:- Local candidates only; must currently live within 50 miles of the Austin, Texas work location.
Work Location and Schedule:- Location: 5805 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78752
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding State holidays when the agency is closed.
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid - On Site and Telework.
