The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a
Financial Officer, SOM Faculty Practice. The Financial Officer supports the school's Faculty Practice team by performing complex financial modeling, analysis, and planning to inform department-specific operational and strategic decisions. This role independently evaluates financial performance, develops models and tools, and provides data-driven recommendations to departmental and SOM leadership. The Financial Officer builds strong relationships with assigned departments, serves as a subject-matter expert on Faculty Practice financial operations, and proactively identifies risks to drive solutions that align with mission, compliance, and fiscal objectives.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities- Serve as the financial partner for departments, maintaining ongoing communication to ensure alignment between departmental goals, financial performance, and Faculty Practice priorities.
- Influence departmental decision-making by providing credible, data driven recommendations, using benchmarking, productivity analysis, and scenario modeling.
- Exercise independent judgment in identifying financial risks, operational issues, and opportunities for improvement; elevate concerns to leadership with clear, actionable solutions.
- Develop, refine, and maintain complex financial models.
- Conduct sensitivity analyses, assess financial risks, and quantify implications to inform decision-making by departmental and SOM leadership.
- Prepare detailed budget submissions, multiyear forecasts, variance analyses, performance decks, and executive level materials for departmental leadership.
- Translate complex analytical findings into clear narratives, recommendations, and options for audiences with varying levels of financial expertise.
- Design and implement financial and analytical processes that improve accuracy, efficiency, and decision support across assigned areas.
- Maintain accountability for high quality, timely work products and ensure all analyses and recommendations adhere to institutional policies, internal controls, and compliance standards.
- Maintain a high level of professional accountability, managing competing priorities autonomously, and ensuring consistent follow-through on commitments.
- Contribute to standard operating procedure development.
- Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's Degree
- Five years of progressively responsible budget and financial analysis experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications- Master's Degree in Finance, Business, Public Administration or related field
- Related experience in higher education or academic medicine.
