The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting a national search for a Division Head & Department Chair of Radiation Oncology. This leader will establish the vision for, guide the development of faculty in, and oversee all operations and functions in the division as well as will establish the vision for, guide the development of faculty in, and oversee all operations and functions in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Successful candidates will be accomplished physicians and proven leaders in a complex healthcare setting. The Division Head of Radiation Oncology reports to the Chief Physician Executive.
The primary role of the Division Head is to provide leadership and assume full responsibility for all areas of the division, including but not limited to, direct patient care; basic, translational, and clinical research within the departments; faculty recruitment, development and evaluation; integration of educational programs; technology advancements; financial stewardship; space administration, and divisional and departmental strategic planning. The Division Head is accountable for setting and achieving measurable outcomes across clinical care, research and innovation, and leadership talent development. The Division Head will provide career development opportunities and mentorship for department faculty and trainees, and foster their growth in clinical, research, academic, and professional areas. The Division Head will foster an efficient multidisciplinary care model through collaborations among other disciplines and Centers. The Division Head will also represent the division and institution in local, regional, state, and national matters. The Division Head will advance strategic growth initiatives, including expansion of precision radiation oncology and theranostics capabilities, advancing integration of advanced imaging and artificial intelligence into clinical and research workflows, and development of external collaborations and opportunities to support delivery of high-quality cancer-related radiation oncology services across the University of Texas System, the MD Anderson Cancer Network, and beyond.
The Division of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson is home to possibly the largest group of radiation oncology-focused professionals in the world, who are dedicated to achieving the highest levels of excellence and quality in the nation's top cancer center mission areas of clinical care, research and development, education, and service. As of September 2026, there are 778 employees: 226 faculty, two administrative professionals, 383 classified staff (including 75 APPs), 20 medical physics professionals, and 147 trainees and students. Candidate Qualifications:
• At least 10 years of relevant experience post clinical degree
• MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree
• Board certification by the American Board of Radiology
• Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure
• Demonstration of clinical excellence and performance
• Administrative experience at a departmental or institutional level
• Proven track record of successful and independent clinical or translational research and grant or protocol funding
• Demonstration of adoption and integration of advanced radiation oncology and/or multi-modal technologies and innovation
• Consistent record of contributions to education or training and to mentoring of trainees, faculty, and staff
• Progressive leadership experience in an academic setting, preferred experience in an oncologic setting
• Ability to function effectively in a matrix organization characterized by complex intra- and inter- disciplinary relationships
