Director, Spend & Rewards Engagement will lead the strategy and execution of marketing programs that create new reasons for Small Business customers to engage with American Express. This leader will help customers discover and realize Membership value, increasing customer engagement, spending, and business growth.
The role leads a portfolio spanning personalized offer strategies, Membership Rewards, merchant offers, industry-focused marketing, strategic partnerships, and emerging customer-engagement opportunities. The Director will use customer insights, analytics, experimentation, and financial performance to identify growth opportunities, shape investment decisions, and continuously improve marketing outcomes.
This is a highly visible leadership role that requires more than strong marketing execution. The successful candidate will be an exceptional enterprise partner, performance marketer, and influential communicator who can align diverse stakeholders, shape strategic and capability roadmaps, secure support and investment, and translate complex opportunities into clear decisions and measurable results.
The Director will lead and develop a team of marketers and work across Finance, Technology, Marketing, Marketing Operations, Legal, Compliance, Investment Management, Analytics, Servicing, Business Development, Product, Membership Rewards, and Offers organizations. The ability to influence without direct authority and build trusted, productive partnerships across a highly matrixed company will be critical to success.
Responsibilities- Set the customer engagement strategy: Define how Small Business customers discover and act on new sources of Membership value, translating customer insight and business priorities into a clear roadmap.
- Deliver measurable growth: Own performance across personalized offers, rewards, industry marketing, and strategic partnerships, with accountability for customer engagement, incremental spending, revenue, and return on investment.
- Build the next generation of personalized engagement: Develop scalable strategies that connect customers with relevant offers, rewards, benefits, and business solutions based on their needs, behaviors, and business characteristics.
- Influence enterprise priorities: Build alignment across Marketing, Product, Technology, Analytics, Finance, Servicing, Marketing Operations, Business Development, Investment Management, Legal, Compliance, Membership Rewards, and Amex Offers to secure decisions, investment, and delivery.
- Lead a high-performing team: Set clear priorities and expectations, develop strong marketers and future leaders, and create a team that brings forward insights, recommendations, and decisions rather than updates alone.
QualificationsThe role is suited for a leader who is equally comfortable setting strategy, influencing senior stakeholders, developing strong enterprise partnerships, leading a team, and delivering measurable marketing performance.
- Significant experience in marketing, growth strategy, customer engagement, loyalty, product marketing, performance marketing, general management, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated success delivering measurable customer and business growth through data-driven marketing strategies.
- Strong performance-marketing experience, including setting business objectives, managing investments, measuring incremental impact, and optimizing performance.
- Proven ability to influence senior leaders and drive outcomes across complex, highly matrixed organizations.
- Demonstrated success building trusted partnerships across business, product, technology, analytics, finance, operations, and risk or control functions.
- Experience leading complex, cross-functional initiatives that involve multiple stakeholders, dependencies, and decision-makers.
- Strong strategic and commercial acumen, with the ability to connect customer needs, marketing performance, financial outcomes, and enterprise priorities.
- Ability to translate data, research, and customer insights into clear business recommendations and actionable growth plans.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to simplify complex topics and influence executive audiences.
- Experience defining forward-looking strategies and roadmaps, not only executing established programs.
- Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing teams.
