Full Job Description
Position Summary:
The Director of Production will lead technical theater operations for performances at Trust venues and performance spaces including the Benedum Center, Byham Theater, Greer Cabaret, Katz Plaza, Liberty Magic, Harris Theater, Rohr Building, and Harris Theater. This position involves skilled work and extensive coordination with both union and non-union workers. The Director consults with internal and external production staff to acquire the information necessary to get productions up and running on time and on budget.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
Education: Bachelor's degree in theater management, business, or related field preferred.
Work Experience: This position requires 7-10 years' work experience that demonstrates a proficiency in technical theater, theater operations, and how each department functions on the production side. Experience with budgeting/cost-estimating for shows and understanding of contractual language is required. Scheduling and logistics experience is required. Direct experience working with and negotiating collective bargaining agreements preferred.
Supervisory Experience: 5-10 years' experience with personnel management required, preferably managing stagehands and production staff. The Director should also have experience building consensus with unionized and non-unionized staff members.
Technical Skills: Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Familiarity with drafting software such as Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and understanding of how to work with blueprints/drawings is highly preferred. Technical knowledge of industry standard equipment including lighting, sound, video, and video walls is preferred.
Intangibles: Diplomatic, approachable at all times, positive outlook, and solution oriented. Proactive and able to anticipate issues. Successful relationship-builder skilled at establishing trust with promoters during show advance discussions.

Essential Functions:
Main job responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with promoters, agents, resident companies, and internal stakeholders to determine labor, equipment, and other logistical needs to ensure timely load in, show, and load out that meets budget expectations, including review of technical rider requirements in advance of shows.
  • Prepare estimates for potential shows/productions; serve as an internal resource and collaborator with programming staff to determine production elements of potential shows.
  • Collaborate with local hiring venues to schedule all union labor and contracted production services for production needs.
  • Supervise house crew, part time stagehands, and other technicians engaged in setting up the stage, shifting scenery, striking, and operating lighting, sound, and video systems.
  • Process regular payroll for direct reports and all union workers involved in production.
  • Provide all costs related to labor as well as rental fees in support of show settlement efforts.
  • Coordinate with stagehands for budgeting, purchasing, and maintenance of all stage equipment.
  • Participate in negotiations with IATSE Local 3 and IATSE Local 787.

Supervisory responsibility: This position is responsible for three full-time Production Managers along with the supervision of eight full-time stagehands across three Trust venues.
Decision-making responsibility: The Director exercises significant discretion when making stagehand labor decisions and ensuring building maintenance occurs on schedule.
Budgetary responsibility: This position is responsible for a sizable purchasing budget for the Benedum Center. In addition, the Director oversees the budget for non-rebillable labor costs.
Strategic responsibility: The Director participates in long-range planning for Benedum maintenance and upkeep, employing a phased approach to ensure facility quality and safety.
Reporting requirements: This position does not have significant reporting requirements.
Travel requirements: Limited travel (less than 5%) is required for this position.
Physical demands: This position involves office work - occasional lifting up to 20-30 lbs. may be required. The individual should be able to sit and/or view a computer screen for extended periods of time. During production load in operations, walking and/or standing for extended periods of time will be necessary.

Salary Range Starting at $90,000
