About the Role

The BD Software Technology Solutions (STS) organization is seeking a Director of Platform Engineering & Cloud Operations to lead the platforms and teams that enable secure, reliable, and scalable software delivery across BD's growing portfolio of cloud-connected products and digital solutions.

This is a technical leadership role for someone who views infrastructure, automation, and developer experience as strategic products. You will lead Platform Engineering, DevOps, Cloud Operations, SRE, and DevSecOps teams while driving cloud-native architectures, AI-augmented software delivery, and automation-first engineering practices that accelerate the delivery of high-quality, compliant software.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable defining platform strategy with senior leaders and engaging deeply with engineering teams on CI/CD, cloud architecture, deployment strategies, observability, reliability, and software delivery performance. You will partner closely with Product Management, Architecture, Security, Test Engineering, and Software Engineering leaders to drive innovation while maintaining the standards required in a regulated healthcare environment.

Success in this role requires balancing speed, reliability, security, cost, and compliance while fostering a culture of operational excellence, automation, continuous improvement, and engineering craftsmanship. The right candidate combines deep technical expertise, strong business acumen, and proven leadership with the vision to transform software delivery through platform engineering, DevOps, and AI-enabled developer productivity.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy
  • Define and execute the DevOps, Platform Engineering, and Cloud Operations strategy aligned with business and engineering objectives.
  • Build and lead high-performing teams while establishing engineering standards, governance, and operational metrics.
  • Drive organizational transformation through automation, self-service platforms, and engineering excellence.

Platform Engineering
  • Develop and evolve developer platforms that improve productivity, consistency, and software delivery outcomes.
  • Establish standardized CI/CD, GitOps, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices across engineering teams.
  • Enable self-service infrastructure and automation capabilities that accelerate development and deployment.

Cloud & Infrastructure
  • Lead cloud strategy and operational excellence across AWS, Azure, and/or GCP environments.
  • Ensure scalable, resilient, secure, and cost-effective infrastructure architectures.
  • Oversee container platforms, environment management, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities.

Reliability & Operations
  • Drive SRE practices focused on reliability, observability, incident management, and operational readiness.
  • Establish and manage SLAs, SLOs, and service performance objectives.
  • Lead proactive monitoring, capacity planning, and continuous service improvement initiatives.

Security & Compliance
  • Embed DevSecOps principles throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Partner with Security and Quality teams to automate compliance, vulnerability management, and governance controls.
  • Ensure cloud platforms and delivery pipelines align with regulatory, security, and corporate requirements.

Continuous Improvement
  • Leverage automation, AI-enabled software delivery, and emerging technologies to improve productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.


Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or platform engineering roles.
  • 5+ years of experience leading managers and geographically distributed engineering teams in a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Proven experience building and operating cloud-native platforms on AWS, Azure, and/or GCP, including containerized and Kubernetes-based workloads.
  • Demonstrated success implementing and scaling CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, DevSecOps, observability, and reliability engineering practices across multiple product teams.
  • Experience operating and supporting mission-critical SaaS platforms with high availability, security, scalability, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong track record of driving engineering transformation initiatives, including platform engineering, automation, developer experience, and AI-augmented software delivery.
  • Experience partnering with Product, Architecture, Security, Quality, and business stakeholders to deliver technology solutions in complex, regulated environments.
  • Healthcare, medical device, life sciences, or other regulated industry experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading Platform Engineering, DevOps, SRE, Cloud Operations organizations.
  • Hands-on experience with modern DevOps toolchains, Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks, and cloud-native technologies.
  • Experience establishing and improving metrics, SLOs/SLAs, operational KPIs, and engineering performance measures.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, Kubernetes (CKA/CKAD), Terraform, or similar cloud and infrastructure credentials.
