Responsibilities

  • Optimize investigation and resolution strategies for escalations; manage litigation with outside counsel as needed.
  • Advise on agreements with vendors and third parties involved in servicing and collections.
  • Draft and review consumer-facing notices and communications regarding servicing and collections.
  • Implement AI features to automate workflows and develop AI support systems.
  • Undertake additional projects based on the evolving needs of the business.

About the Role

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Corporate Counsel will serve as a cross-functional legal partner, advising primarily on servicing, collections, and litigation matters and supporting other areas as needed. This is a high-ownership role suited for a structured, detail-oriented, and impact-driven attorney who thrives in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Servicing and Collections: advise cross-functionally to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements relating to servicing and collections; draft and review related policies and procedures; track changes to applicable requirements.
  • Risk Mitigation: monitor escalations to identify patterns and risks; investigate, document and remediate systemic gaps; manage arbitration agreements; work with Product and Servicing teams to continuously improve products and user flows based on learnings.
  • Escalations & Litigation: optimize triage, investigation and resolution strategy across all types of escalations; manage all contentious matters, with targeted support from outside counsel where appropriate; streamline processes and forms.
  • Third-Party Agreements: advise on agreements with vendors, debt buyers, and other third parties involved in servicing and collections, including reviewing SLA requirements, ensuring chain-of-title documentation for debt sale programs, etc.
  • Consumer-Facing: draft and review notices and other communications relating to servicing and collections; advise on hardship, deferral, re-age, and charge-off program compliance.
  • AI & Automation: test and implement AI features to automate as many workflows as possible; build AI agents and playbooks to support these workflows.
  • Additional projects and duties based on the evolving needs of the business.


What we look for
  • J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership (New York or California preferred).
  • 8+ years of legal experience, with meaningful time at a top-tier law firm followed by in-house experience at a high-growth technology or fintech company.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on servicing, collections, and litigation matters in consumer finance.
  • Strong business judgment; ability to identify and escalate material legal risks and propose practical solutions to business partners.
  • Experience with AI and building automated workflows.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage a high-volume, multi-workstream portfolio.
  • Can-do attitude and a willingness to jump in where needed; no job is too big or too small and some may not exactly fit in the four corners of this job description.
Compensation

This role has an annual starting salary range of $220,000 - $270,000 + equity +benefits. Actual compensation and title will vary based on skills and experience.

Location

We're headquartered in San Francisco, CA (Financial District). This role is expected to be primarily on-site. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

We regularly bring our team together for offsites & trips, about every 2 months, both for fun and for work. We cover all travel & lodging in these cases.
