Complex Solutions Engineer - Engineering Resolution (ERT)
This role has been designed as 'Hybrid' with a requirement that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.
Job Description:About the RoleWe're hiring a
Complex Solutions Engineer to join our Level 3 Engineering Support team. This role is for an engineer who is energized by difficult production problems, especially those that do not neatly fit within a single product, service, or support boundary.
At its core, this is a solution engineering role. The work centers on understanding how systems interact, troubleshooting across technologies, taking ownership of complex issues, and turning hard-won lessons into better tools, stronger processes, and more reliable services.
We are not looking for someone who has mastered every area of infrastructure on day one. We are looking for someone with strong technical fundamentals, a systems mindset, sound judgment, and the curiosity to keep learning as modern IT environments become more distributed, automated, and increasingly shaped by AI-assisted operations.
What You'll Do- Lead or contribute to the resolution of complex incidents that span multiple systems, teams, or technology layers.
- Troubleshoot issues across interconnected environments and help identify the true source of failure, even when the problem is ambiguous at first.
- Use structured problem-solving methods such as divide-and-conquer, hypothesis testing, and root cause analysis to work through difficult technical issues.
- Take end-to-end ownership of problems, partnering with specialists and stakeholders through mitigation, resolution, and follow-up.
- Contribute to blameless postmortems and help translate lessons learned into practical improvements.
- Improve how the team collects data, analyzes incidents, and responds at scale by building repeatable and efficient operational workflows.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual work through scripting, automation, better tooling, and clearer operational processes.
- Help improve service reliability by strengthening observability, response workflows, and preventative practices.
- Serve as a technical leader and single point of ownership for complex customer issues, coordinating specialists while maintaining clear communication throughout the lifecycle of the problem.
- Mentor other engineers and help strengthen a solution-oriented engineering culture built on learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
What We're Looking ForThe strongest candidates for this role are thoughtful troubleshooters with a broad interest in how complex systems work. They may come from support engineering, systems engineering, infrastructure, software engineering, reliability, or other technical backgrounds, but they share a common mindset: they like solving hard problems and improving the system around them.
- Strong technical foundation in one or more areas such as operating systems, networking, cloud, storage, virtualization, distributed systems, or software development.
- Proven troubleshooting ability in production or customer-facing environments, especially where issues are not isolated to a single component.
- Systems thinking and the ability to understand how different parts of an environment interact.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to make progress in ambiguous situations.
- Experience with scripting, coding, automation, or tooling is valuable, along with a willingness to keep building those capabilities over time.
- Clear communication, strong ownership, and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Curiosity, adaptability, and a learn-it-all mindset.
Preferred Experience- Experience working in technical support, systems engineering, reliability engineering, infrastructure, or software engineering roles.
- Familiarity with Linux or Windows systems, virtualization, networking fundamentals, cloud platforms, and enterprise infrastructure.
- Exposure to SRE concepts such as monitoring, alerting, service reliability, and toil reduction.
- Experience with automation, scripting, or internal tooling development.
- Interest in data analysis, AI-assisted tooling, or modern operational workflows.
Education and BackgroundOutstanding engineers come from a range of backgrounds. A formal academic path is valuable, but equivalent experience solving complex real-world problems is just as relevant for this role.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, or a related technical field preferred.
- Master's degree in a relevant discipline is a plus, particularly for candidates with strong systems, infrastructure, or data-oriented backgrounds.
- Candidates without a formal degree will be considered if they can demonstrate equivalent experience through production engineering, complex troubleshooting, automation work, internal tooling, or open-source contributions.
- Relevant certifications are a plus, particularly in Linux administration, networking, cloud architecture, ITIL, Agile delivery, DevOps, or site reliability engineering.
- Useful examples include Linux certifications, networking certifications, ITIL Foundation, Scrum or Agile certifications, and professional-level cloud certifications across AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Experience or coursework in data analytics, AI, or machine learning is also valuable for engineers helping modernize diagnostic and operational workflows.
