Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Civil/Structural System Engineer. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, as well as supporting existing systems, modifications and customers occupying the facilities. This position supports the Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) portfolio consisting of nuclear, accelerator and non-nuclear facilities, spanning half of the laboratory's footprint. As a Civil/Structural System Engineer in this area, you will directly support facilities with a direct impact on LANL's stockpile stewardship mission. Daily tasks include but are not limited to response to emerging facility issues, configuration management including facility technical baseline management, electrical/pressure safety support, reviewing designs for facility modification and providing system health reporting.
Civil/Structural System Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000) As a Civil/Structural System Engineer with Engineering Services, you will serve as the owner's representative for engineering for your assigned facilities. You will concurrently interface with design teams, maintenance, and operations, shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing portfolio. The level 2 role includes the following job opportunities:
Technical Baseline & Configuration Management
- Provide control and maintenance of the technical baseline of the facility equipment
- Ensures that facility system configuration is being managed effectively using a risk-based graded approach
- Support configuration management
- Control and maintain the master equipment list (MEL) for assigned facilities
- Review design outputs for impact to technical baseline and master equipment lists
Compliance & Standards
- Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management in accordance with the LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), LANL Administrative Procedures (APs), LANL Master Specifications, and related Codes and Standards
Maintenance Management
- Assist in defining maintenance requirements involving corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance
- Provide information for preventative maintenance schedule
Safety & Quality Assurance
- Coordinate with Pressure Safety Officer (PSO) on facility pressure safety systems
Documentation & Technical Review
- Review IWD's
- Review Civil/Structural Drawings, Details, and Calculations
- Develop Civil/Structural Drawings, Details, and Calculations
Facility Assessment & Monitoring
- Perform regular facility system walkdowns and Facility Health Reports
Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor lower-level Structural system engineers
Technical Expertise & Support
- Source of expert knowledge of assigned facilities
- Provide technical interface to existing facility systems and components
Civil/Structural System Engineer 3 ($128,000 - $215,900) In addition to duties listed above, the level 3 role includes the following job duties:
- Make visionary organizational contributions regarding design and business practices
- Contribute to improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards
- Facilitate technical growth of the civil/structural system design team
- Assist Team Lead with work planning, staffing projections and hiring
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Nuclear Facility Knowledge & Compliance
- Extensive knowledge and experience in nuclear facility engineering processes, maintenance techniques, work planning and control development, Quality, Safety Basis and other Nuclear Facility safety management programs
- Demonstrated experience working with industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the nuclear facility engineering discipline
- Expert knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and procedures, guides, and administrative practices
Technical Baseline & Documentation
- Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in preparing and reviewing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems
Design & Analysis
- Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining or establishing design or analysis tasks and prepare design concepts that meet both the regulatory and performance requirements for systems and equipment
- Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in developing design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable
System Monitoring & Performance Analysis
- Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining and collecting metrics on the usage, process, safety, and other parameters of interest for the structure, system, or components
- Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in evaluating and trending system health
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
- Demonstrated ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the Structural SME
Leadership & Mentorship
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering interns and other engineers

- Expert leading a design team and / or organization
- Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to mechanical facilities engineering
- Expert knowledge of engineering work planning, budgeting and design coordination
Education/Experience for Civil/Structural System Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications: - Civil/Structural engineering degree and/or experience with facility systems is strongly preferred
- Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
- Design or operations experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations
- Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes
- Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
