Sundays have two sides to them: the first is all easy-breezy brunch with friends, maybe some cocktails. Time unfolds slowly up until 5 pm or so. But as soon as the sun goes down, you can almost hear the sound of the needle scratching off the record as you realize you have to go to work tomorrow. That’s when the supremely uncomfortable feeling of free-floating anxiety and low-level panic known as “Sunday night dread” sets in.
The Sleep Judge surveyed 1,034 working people about their level of anxiety on Sundays.

A full 81% of respondents felt anxiety on Sundays in apprehension of the workweek ahead. A majority, 57%, felt it in the evening.
Monday was the most dreaded day of the week, by 62%. Relatedly, Sunday was reported to be the most restless night of sleep, at 63%.
The most common symptoms of the “Sunday scaries” were:
- Anxiety: 59%
- Restless/poor sleep: 49%
- Depressed mood: 37%
- Irritability: 30%
- Insomnia: 24%
There wasn’t a huge difference between people who were satisfied with their job and dissatisfied with their job experiencing Sunday night dread. A vast majority, 89%, of people who were dissatisfied with their job experienced it, compared with 76% of people who were satisfied with their jobs.
Activities that people did to help relieve their Sunday anxiety included:
- Exercise: 29%
- Watching tv, movies, other entertainment: 16%
- Spending time with family or friends: 12%
How to break out of the mood
Instead of emailing and panicking, try doing something nice for yourself on Sunday nights. What to avoid: anything numbing, like booze; scrolling through social media feeds, and binge-watching TV.
Instead, develop a ritual, go to the park, get a manicure, go to the gym, or buy yourself a small treat or favorite snack. Maybe call a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Call your mom! Have something to look forward to – and hang on to.
